New to Legion, new to war games.

I never painted minis (never will).

Be strong. Don't let others guilt you into spending copious amounts of your limited free time doing something you find to be a miserable slog. They will try to say that you are literally a bad person for not painting your tiny men (possibly because you want to play a game and not do arts and crafts). Please tell them to **** off and continue having fun how you prefer.

I guess, but the hard part (the legs) are pegged in at a fixed angle so they shouldn't be that difficult. Compared to assembling the speeder bikes (which were a penance with their tiny, tiny pieces) it should be a breeze, especially since you don't have to worry about getting your fingers stuck together.

The legs are easy it's the arms that are hard. Its because the arms attach at a ball socket meaning u can glue them on at any angle, the problem is both arma are supposed to come together to hold the blaster, so u glue one arm on thinking it's at the right angle to have the other arm reach it attach only to realize that u put it in at such an angle that the other arm cant reach so not theres a gab between 1 arm and the blaster, so u have to start all over trying to find the best way to get those arms to fit on.

That's like saying there's people who will say you're a bad person for not taking an optimal list. It doesn't make you a bad person. But it does make you someone whose army looks bad.

I don't have to choose between playing and painting, you're suggesting a false choice. I paint when playing is not an option. And I don't have to clear my schedule to do it. 5 minutes of painting, 12 hours off. 20 minutes of painting, 6 hours off. 10 minutes of painting, 8 hours off. After I have a legal army painted, it's no big deal to paint one new unit in the time between my weekly game night. You only have to paint the army once. Spend a few hours painting 800 points and you'll have a painted army for ALL the games you play. 800 points of Empire is very easy to paint. Vader takes 10 minutes and he's 1/4 of an army!

The problem is my friend who wants to try a new system every 5 minutes so I'm perpetually in a state of getting a large-ish legal force painted!

Thanks for the replies. Any idea why a store owner would have recommended me to wait for Clone Wars as it would be “much better?” Was that only subjective?

I suspect it was "latest is greatest" power-creep hype. Like how the latest GW faction is usually blatantly overpowered. I wouldn't worry about it.

With what I’ve read, it sounds like the two original core sets might be my ideal go at the moment.

That store owner either believes in power creep, or he wants to sell you the more expensive core sets.

The new armies are solid contenders, sure, but I don’t think they are power creeped. Mechanics creeped yes. Much more complicated with more triggers. But not necessarily power level.

Buy two core sets of whichever armies you like best - if it’s the Clone Wars era go for it! If you prefer the original trilogy, buy the original trilogy and don’t feel like you’re going to be underperforming.

Really, at that point just fill in with characters you have to have or units you like - I really like the bounty hunters for Empire. Leia for Rebels. I’m debating about going back and adding the rest of the classic rebel characters.

Also, while I won’t shame you for not painting them, I do highly suggest you make an effort to try. You may be surprised - I too once said “not going to do it” but once I tried it AND learned a valuable lesson that takes no practice to learn, it became an absolute treat and I found I enjoy it a ton.

Here’s the secret lesson, takes no paint skills to know or learn: don’t try and rush an assembly line of minis to get the whole army done in one go. Don’t even try to get a full unit done in one go (outside of priming). It will turn into a chore and you will hate it when you do that.

Instead, take it one mini at a time. Write down what you did on one if you like the effect and want to replicate it to other minis. It’s ok to play with an army in varying stages of painting.

Again, not shaming you - but you said you had never done it and will never do it. I just ask you give it a try to know if you don’t like it or not instead of saying not going to happen.

See above. I think it’s perfectly rational to encourage someone to try a part of our hobby we find enjoyable, same as how we would encourage or talk about it to someone else when sharing an interest of ours. If he said “tried it, hated it” that’s one thing. He’s never tried it.

Also, gave pointers on how not to make it miserable (because even if you like painting, trying to produce a full unit in one go is painful).

I do point out that painting time doesn’t take away from playing time - painting is done when I don’t have someone to play a game with. It’s much harder for me to find a contiguous 3 hours for a game (plus set up and tear down) than it is to find a little bit of time here or there. Most of my painting sessions are 60 min or less.

I am a novice painter, been doing it coming on two years, but I have spent very little time painting due to life, but I was in the same boat as you. I didn't think I could do it. I decided to try since I had so many miniature games that were gray plastic and I had so much down time between actually playing games. I thought painting would give me time on my games when I didn't have time or an opponent to actually play, and for the most part this has been the true when I do get a little time. I am an ok beginner painter and a LAZY painter - do to skill and general laziness. I will prime in a base color to skip a step, I still am not up to layering and will wash and dry-brush for highlights. I have not purchased any of the new GW Contrast paints, but I will soon. I started with the Reaper Learn To Paint kit and it is invaluable for a new painter and I have added to my stock of paint and supplies from there. Watch some of the videos @TauntaunScout posts, some great tips in there for some painting shortcuts and army painting. Watch @Sorastro for one of the top Star Wars painters with both basic and advanced techniques. There are many other great vlog painters and everyone will have their favorites. Don't be intimidated or afraid and if you mess up, strip and start again, it's just acrylic paint.

It is like saying that, and those people would be dicks as well for acting that way. Using, say, Targeting Scopes on a minimum unit of Stormtroopers,, does not make one a bad person. But it does make you someone whose army composition looks bad. That's not the end of the world.

You're not an example of the type of person I'm talking about. If he's never tried it, I hope he gives it a go without spending too much on supplies. Tons of people enjoy the art side of wargaming.

Well, I ended up finding someone that sold his copy of the original core set plus Boba Fett for a really decent price. Thanks to all your advice!

Some of the units are assembled, some are not. Some stormtroopers have been primed with white. Who knows, maybe I will try to finish the black details 🤷‍♂️ and maybe that will lead me in painting the rest. We’ll see... but you definitely helped me realize it may not be as daunting as it looks.

On a different note now, I made a post on the army builder topic to get some suggestions. I will most likely go Imperial first. If you also have some recommendations for me, feel free to post them here or in the new post!

As mentioned in the new post, I’m looking for fun, efficient and yet not necessarily fully optimal/most competitive. I don’t really want to buy 4 of the same boxes because that would make the best list. To me, it reduces the fun a bit since it is a bit more redundant. I also just love Death Troopers so if you list suggestion includes them, it will certainly get my attention!

But if not, thank you for helping me choose between the two core sets. I guess I am in Legion now!

No problem. Glad to help. Most of us are always ready to welcome another new player. Be sure to let us know how your early games go. Remember your mistakes as well as the things that work for you.
