Wing Leaders (because i know this question will come up)

By Lyianx, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, we got a few Wing Leader cards shown off.

They read:

You are a wing leader . Your wingmates must be 2, 3, 4 or 5 other ships of your ship type <or whatever other combos there will be>

While you defend, up to 2 of your wingmates in the attack arc may suffer 1 [hit] or [crit] damage to cancel a matching result.

So i know this question will come up. Given what we've seen in this shot of wingmate assignment...

It seems like once a ship is assigned as a wingmate, its ALWAYS a wingmate, regardless if its in formation or not. So would all of you say that the "Biggs effect" of diverting damage works even out of formation, just has to be in the attack arc?

Something tells me this isn't how FFG is intending it to work, but based on what we know so far, and the given wording, it seems like it will work this way. If someone has more info, please Do tell.

With the limited information we have right now that is how it looks to function. We'll see how they flesh things out closer to release of Epic.

To quote from the stream thread:

If a ship in a wing bumps, they instead attempt to execute the maneuver on the wing leader's dial, and then they're not in the wing anymore. Ships can join or leave a wing over the course of the game!

Ships can also voluntarily leave a wing. If a ship is at R1 of a wing leader, you can rejoin the wing, just snapping into position

I'd think that a ship that is no longer in a wing, is no longer a wingmate and not eligible for the "Biggs effect". Otherwise, over the course of a few turns you could put all the ships in a 8 ship swarm in a wing, then split them off and they would all count for the "Biggs effect".

I vaguely remember them saying that. And yeah, you'd think they would no longer be a 'wingman' but who knows.

Also, max number of ships in a wing is 6, and from what i gather from that stream, all have to be assigned into the wing before the game starts, so you cant form a new wing, or build onto an existing wing mid-game.

Yep, the ships that make up a wing looks to be locked in during either Setup or list building (they're assigned wing tokens). It comes down to how they have "wingmate" defined in the rules.

Too soon, Executus!

Hard to give a firm answer about any of this until we see the actual rules.
