New Idea: Release similar units for both factions at the same time

Ok, ok, probably not a new idea but.... What if, we released taun tauns and dewbacks at the same time instead of 2 new units for one faction at a time.

What do you think?

We talked about it on our recent episode: https://podcast.thefifthtrooper.com/e/star-wars-legion-podcast-ep-53-you-even-tauntaun-bro/

Like Sabine and Bossk? Empire and Rebel Specialists? E-Webs and 1.4FDs? That'd be pretty wacky, man, you need to let up on the gas ;)

Like if only....

I think in theory it is a good idea, however, how does it work if a faction grows beyond the analogous units that we see with the Rebels and Empire? What I mean is, say the Galactic Republic only ever got the two corps units, phase I & II clones respectively, but got a huge variety of commander and operative options?

Why should each faction need to have the same analogous releases? I uses the above example because we don't see a lot of different clone types in the clone wars. Yes, we do see some, but more often than not, we saw the clones differentiated by how they stylized their armour, rather than function. I could easily (well maybe not easily) paint my same clone troopers up as either the 501st or Plo Kloon’s Wolfpack.m. There could be lesser variety for the republic than the separatists, Who could get more heavies while the republic gets another operative to choose from.

as long as the factions remain so cookie cutter, it makes sense, but as the factions evolve that will be less likely.

There is also the issue of budgeting, as a player with a limited budget, I already have to pick and choose, I'm sure many that collect multiple factions prefer the spread out release.

I would much prefer the factions to be further differentiated by release of more different units and characters. Widen the differences between factions rather than close them. So no simultaneous release of similar units for each faction.

I mean if similar units are released just a few weeks apart, I don't really see the big deal. I get for the competitive tournament goers it can be a pain if the other faction's cool new unit comes out, and yours isn't out yet but otherwise it's not too important. I also agree with others have said, I also don't strictly see the need for mirrored releases, factions can have more variation between their units. I suspect though that will happen more in clone wars, empire/rebels have more similarities after all than droids/clones.

What happens if you release them at the same time and have to recall one of them cause it has the wrong bases?

A Dewbackle followed by rampant Tauntaunery

People forget that the mirrored releases are largely to fulfill the idea that you don't have to buy cross faction to get an upgrade card. If the rebels have say a commander coming out with a new command upgrade, the empire also needs a commander so that they are not left out (see Han and the Emperor)

I generally don’t “get” balanced releases - I would prefer more differentiation between factions.

I get why it was done for a new game with just two choices, but suspect now factions will get further apart in terms of releases / options.... but we will see.

I absolutely agree that this alternating months thing for factions is a bit ridiculous. Rebels are on top for a month, then Imperials. If they're going to mirror units, they should mirror release dates as well. This month it's commanders, next it's power creep unit 1138, the following month it's heavy-units-that-will-never-see-the-table 3, and so on. Ideally, they wouldn't mirror units so completely, but I doubt they'll be creative enough to stop doing that.
