How to Break the Game (Or, How Garm shines on a SSD)

By RyonOlson, in Star Wars: Armada

Hello all,

Over the weekend I finally put my SSD on the board, but being the Rebel that I am I decided to fly it with my Rebel fleet (1500 point game). I have to say that my combo of Garm + Ahsoka on the Executor I is one of the most versatile command ship builds ever. Having an easy way to run all 4 fleet commands at a time is fantastic. It also meant that my other 3 officer slots could be used for things other than command-swap officers, such as DCO, Flight Commander, and Major Derlin. During the game I also kept two GR75s tucked in close, one running bomber command and the other with comms net.

So, all of you theory-crafters here... How would you break the game if there were no faction restrictions?

Why not go all the way to crazy town and play the SSD with Raddus 🙃

Raddus on an ozzel/Corvus raider to make it sting even worse.

Squad fest

Jan Ors with Dengar, doing the intel for Wexley, Steele, Jonus and Defenders, and Squall pushing up B-wings alongside a Vector with Bomber Command Centre, all those Escorted by a big fat Sato Cymoon with All Fighters follow me. Did I mention to include Rhymer and Jendon, and Adar Tallon as well as a Yavaris?

Sure, it goes over 400 points, but come on, it's the dream bomberball

*And Toryn, because rerolls

Game-breaking?
I guess nothing really breaks the game. Just play it the way you and your opponent like.

Balance-breaking?
Alright, here we go.

SSD "Harrow" with Commander Kyrsta Agate, Officer Kyrsta Agate and Minister Tua.

Don't forget Walex for more defense token fun!

Well, you're forgetting Stele, but I guess you'll get him anyway since his card is stapled to Jendon's in everyone's collection I've ever seen...

Ackbar, Arquitens and arquitens and arquitens and....

Don't forget you can get 2 Gozanti for the price of an Arquitens

I... wow. Didn't even consider that. A ship with a three dice attack for less than a pair of squadrons. They'll have to get closer than the arquitens though, and they can't have turbolaser upgrades (a DTT on each Arq is great value and bonus! comes with them.)

What's the point?

Might as well make new rules, points cost, whatever.

Spoil sport. In a perfect points balanced system removing faction limitations shouldn't break the game in any meaningful way.

If that's not the case I will enjoy learning from it, finding out exactly what mechanics made it break without the safety net of faction limitations.

While I say go ahead and experiment between the factions if you wish. I dont agree with this argument.

Empire only upgrade cards are designed with Empire ships in mind. And while it might be perfectly balanced on a Star Destroyer with access to imperial commanders, it might be broken on a mc75 with a Rebel commander effect.

So even if the game was perfectly balanced (which it's not) it could make broken meta without faction limitations

See that's the thing.

Take my example. Ackbar x Arquitens and Gozanties. Neither of these two ships are exceptional in anyway. They are both pretty standard ships, but due to the interaction with how Ackbar works they may allow him to function better than he does in a rebel fleet. Perhaps to a broken degree? I don't know, I'd like to find out.

If not, all is well, but if it does break the game... we have a problem.

Because the problem that has been uncovered in this case isn't only to do with faction limitations, it's to do with Ackbar and his interactions with ship types. If he becomes broken when we use him with the empires small broadsider ship, then we won't be able to add small broadsider ships to the rebels. If SW:Resistance introduces a rebel corvette that's nothing but side guns then we won't be able to balance it well. It'll either be underpowered without Ackbar, or overpowered with him.

For a game to be perfectly balanced we have to be able to scale it well into any possible future content. If we can't scale it well into the other half of content we already have then it's a worrying sign.

That said, perfect balance is impossible, so toning down faction identity to chase it is not often advisable.
