Speed of character development

By Amketch, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

There seem to be quite a few people with problems with the speed of Character advancement. I think the problems that are being experienced are all down to the speed at which advancements are acquired. With the high competence of starting characters speedy “levelling up” is unnecessary and feel the system was designed for slow advancement. Then maybe later in the design process it was perceived that players wanted quicker advancement so higher level of rewards was recommended.

We tend to get an advance only when our characters have “achieved something significant” in the story. This had lead to slower advances but no one feels hard done by, as I said as you start with a reasonable competence you do not become frustrated your character cannot achieve anything. We also come from a CoC background so am not really use to sudden competency gains. The advances for us are a nice to have not the point of playing the character.

yeah

I use a slow speed of character development. But mainly that is because if advancing too fast the game would bring our group to a sudden halt. When more advanced careers becomes available i think I might speed the development up a bit.

At current rate my party recieves maximum 1 xp per 8 hour session. with more advance careers and options available I think 1-2 xp per 8 hour sessions seems fine, and maybe and additional 1 xp for completing a major story goal in a campaign.

As it is now, for us it would be impossible to use the XP rules as they are, since we would very quickly run out of advancing options.

Good gaming

I do 1 xp for each session, and a bonus +1 at the end of an adventure, (are adventures usually last more then one session)

Also seeing as half the party joined in late, I give any adventurer who is on there first adventure +1 xp.

Our highest level member has around 12 or so xp after

The Savage Prophet (1 session thus 2 xp) 2

The Bigger Game (2 sessions thus 3 xp and 4xp for then new member) 5/4

Diplomancer (several sessions, only 2 with exstensive action thus 3xp and 4 xp for the new member) 8/7/4

"I Reach for the Stars" (2 sessions, no combat but some mighty fine dice rolling thus 3xp) 11/10/7

The current adventure has been 3 sessions so far all of which have had combat so it looks like the xp straggler will make it to rank 2.

In conclusion after 10-12 sessions we have 11 xp, what are some of your balances like.
