Have you ever had the french national anthem translated....thats at just one long bloody rant of murder and death on the battlefield ( it really is a we are going for f#%k you up and stamp on your corpse chant) .
the British one is about being great sailors and our navy never being defeated, remembering for most of its existence Britain ( pre the high/late Middle Ages Britain was under the power of a french dynasty and did not have a truly British identity) has been constantly defending itself against European superpowers who could have eat it for breakfast if it’s navy broke. Our very religion offended the superpowers of European ( France, Spain etc) and they were out for out blood ( so we did a good line piracy, but that’s only fair if the other side want to burn you as heritics)
All in all the British anthem is pretty balanced...if we had gone down the french lines it would have been something like...
You came to burn us at the stake and boil us alive in pots...instead we sank all your ships and stole all the silver and gold you had already stolen from a poor bunch who had not even got around to inventing the wheel.... keep it up, we can sink you ships all day long...
