Bringing an Exiled Obligation Into play

By Fl1nt, in Game Masters

Hello there.

In my campaign I have an player with the Exiled Obligation, he's far from Home and cant come back.

I'm currently looking for ways to bring this Obligation into play and / or make it more interesting.

Has anyone dealt with something like this before or has ideas on this?

You can have the PC encounter people or situation that remind them of the home they cannot return to. Or situations that that are similar to the reasons they became exiled. Or bad news from home that might have been less bad if the PC had been there to help?

Take them to a place where there's a district or embassy of that planet.

Or have him run into people from his past that know of his exile and the reasons why.

We probably could have more advice to give if we knew why he was exiled.

An assignment - a delivery, a bounty, whatever - has the character "accidentally" end up where he was banished from.

You're not going to do this for the very first adventure but the overall arc of the story can deposit the PC at his point of contention. Also, you're going to want to work with the player and develop a good story behind his banishment. Make sure to come up with one or two interesting NPCs that said PC can bump into later.

He receives an urgent and dire message saying he *must* come home to... save his mum, or whatever. High school reunion... something.

Now he must decide between the dire and urgent threat, or keep to the exile.

Depending on how common their species is they could run into a small colony outpost or neighborhood in a big city of their own people. Start with good familial relationships and have it turn sour once they find out the truth. Maybe helping these people lowers their stain of exile. Need more information about the who what and why but you can use this for great story and roleplay.

I myself dont know all the specifics as of know, we're still working out the characters story details.

As things stand, the character is a chiss who has been forced to leave the ascendancy because his life was threatened by a rival (who then proceeded to frame the character for some nasty stuff).

Thanks alot for all the responses :)

Framed you say?

Part of this Obligation might be to find a lead to a piece of evidence. All the while being involved in another mission, the character would be very eager to find that evidence.

Life threatened by a rival? Exile Obligation in this case might mean an encounter with a bounty hunter, or even an assassin, hired by that rival. You know, just to silence the character. Wanted dead or dead. (Yes, overlapping a Bounty Obligation, but narratively clearly related).

Nasty stuff you mention? What if the character Obligation is triggered, and as a result some people related to that nasty stuff come looking for that character, believing the framed part to be true? How would the character handle a hunting civilian mob that believes him to be the killer of their loved ones?
