Darth Maul Advice

By Prosk_019, in X-Wing

Just got the chance to run this in fly casual and I need some guidance.

Darth Maul (67)
Hate (9)
General Grievous (3)
Count Dooku (10)
Scimitar (4)

Ship total: 93 Half Points: 47 Threshold: 5

I really like this as a base build and I'd appreciate any suggestions on good ships to pair with this, as well as if I should trim anything off of the build (such as the title).

One more thing is I'd like people's opinions on whether the components of this build are still viable after the points change. Dooku must've gone up for some reason, right?

EDIT: Suggestions don't have to be specific to what's available in fly casual

What is the rest of the list? I like palp, can be good for close in aces.

I don't think you really need Scimitar. Even the other options beyond Hate are a flavor-to-taste addition for Maul if you have leftover points. If you drop 17 points off of Maul and just run Maul + Hate, that's practically a Vulture - and I'd much rather the extra ship as CIS stands. Maul is a blunt instrument, a hammer - at least that's the most successful way I've seen him played. I'd add Grievous back first, least number of points and pretty useful with a mini-swarm in the game.

I love to fly him with just Hate and Chancellor Palpatine. Comes in at 90 points, gives you a Force Rating of 4, which helps you double-tap and still mod two focus results, and Palp lets you punish attackers at range 1-2.

I ran him at a tournament at the weekend with Dooku, Palo, and Hate - alongside Grievous and 404 - Maul was about the only consistent part of the list, with 5 force and hate he was very difficult to kill, and didn't really mind being stressed.

Unfortunately the dice god's were not on my side and I rolled a total of 7 evade results across 4 rounds of swiss, to come last - but none of that changes that the Maul build gave all my opponents issues, and during a test game solo'd three IG-88's (which had all lost some shields) to win the game

Thanks for the feedback, I did find that at least on maul I didn't have a lot of use for the title beyond some pre-engagement movement. I should have stressed that I plan to keep dooku cause he's really interesting to use, but I'm glad I can safely shave the title.

This is where I need your help, I'd greatly appreciate suggestions for what to fly alongside the build that I've presented. Also at this point if another infiltrator is recommended, the title is now fair game.

Thing with Maul that I didn't notice at first is his ability is ridiculous

Makes it difficult to use Dookrew, which only functions at full force

My next go at Maul will have him packing Kraken to modify his double tap while also supporting his wingbots

My current go-to Separatist list is the following:

Maul w/ Hate and Palpatine

Grievous w/ Daredevil

Dooku

Sadly, the list doesn't have room for Hate and the title on Dooku anymore, but he still works as a beefy wingman without it. Grievous with Daredevil is a fantastic cheap flanker, and Maul as the centerpiece.

It pushed people into a "Damned if I do, damned if I don't" with Maul. If you go after him early, you'll fuel his double attacks and take stress from Palp, which will make it easier for his wingmen to eat you up. If you go for the wingmen, then you're dealing with Maul in the endgame.

I wanna make a joke about naked dooku being something I don't wanna think about...

In all seriousness I can't help but feel like, when you don't at least take the title, you're paying a lot for a pilot likely priced with it's 1.0 whisper-like capabilities in mind. At least he's still good for stress (Jesus,

red target locks too). What a fantastic ability.

The idea behind the list as a whole is sweet though

I thought the same about Dooku. However, I've realized two things:

1) I was terrible at planning my large ship decloaks anyway.

2) Dooku is still really good as a ship that basically generates a free Calculate token each turn, which he can spend to remove stress and target locks, and is also then free to use his regular action to either barrel roll or acquire a lock. Plus, the chassis has one of the best dials in the game. I've looked for other ways to spend those 63 points, but nothing else matches up.

Amen, brother.

As to your second point, that's very true! I wish there was a way to easily see the bigger picture on certain ship designs, cause a beefy ship with a fantastic dial and auto-generated focus conversions sounds good enough on its own, almost even by 1.0 standards! I wonder how things would be if dooku had a talent slot instead...

I may have missed the memo, but are feethans viable as semi-beefy jousters? If so that simplifies things a bit

In my experience they are very good, you have to like and be decent and aggressive blocking but they are quite good.

Scimitar title is for Dooku, not for Maul. May Cthulhu eats the whole FFG team on extreme pain and blood for this blasphemy, but it's the sad true.

Best with Kraken as the single calculate can be a bit weak. With Kraken there's no better deal in the game IMO.

Still want to try 4 of these guys with a Kraken Sear.

Well thanks for opening up my options for base units, I had written off the feethans rather early on
