Unequal Fleet Size, Handicapping, and MOV

By RobertK, in Star Wars: Armada

I’ve been interested in a “casual/competitive” system to play with my 17-year-old son who isn’t tremendously into the game but who is a competitive sort.

So what is stupid about allowing no limit on fleet sizes, but saying that any points in excess of 400 counts in favor of your opponent’s score? So my son’s 500 point fleet against my 390 point fleet would give me 100 points at the end plus whatever I scored from objectives and ships of his I destroyed. His score would be determined normally. Clearly the super-sized fleet has to get a lot done with its extra points, but running a big fleet is fun! On the other hand, my boy is old enough that he doesn’t want to get a win on a silver platter, thus the MOV adjustment.

Thoughts?

This is like, my life. It works just fine. Other fun asymmetrical ideas: let the little guy secretly choose one of his ships to be worth no points and/or one of yours to be worth double points. Or give a free flotilla to smaller player that can’t be targeted if obstructed and has to make it to the opposite end of the board without being destroyed.

I generally play asymmetric 'missions' with my son at home where his rebel forces have an entirely different objective, something where once achieved his ships can flee to hyperspace with a nav command.

I usually play the numerically superior but slower to react imperial forces and have reserves that show up every couple of turns to put the pressure on

My longest, bitterest grudge against Armada is that they didn’t include the asymmetrical missions with each expansion they did with X-Wing 1.0.
