Newbie Claim Action Question

By Duskw0lf, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hi! First time Star Wars Destiny caller, long time FFG listener. Big fan of the program so far and thanks for fielding my question! It's probably a really stupid question, but I'm having trouble finding reference to my question any where, and since I probably won't be playing this game in a store any time soon, I'd like to get this question answered for our home games until then. Thanks in advance for the help!

Can a player take the claim action on the first round of the game? I realize control of the battlefield is given to whomever's battlefield is chosen during setup, but can a player still take the claim action on the first round to use the claim ability and/or gain control of the battlefield for the following round?

So, after the battlefield roll-off, the player whose battlefield was chosen begins the game with control of the battlefield and will go first in the first round of the game. Players then take turns taking actions. At any time during that first round and every round after, a player's action may be to claim the battlefield. If they do, they may trigger the claim ability (if the battlefield has one), then take control of the battlefield and after must pass all future turns that round.

So, yes, a player can take a claim action during any of their turns on the first round of the game (so long as their opponent hasn't already claimed the battlefield that round).

A round is active until both players pass, a round consists of multiple turns, once you claim the rest of your turns are to pass. The round ends when both players pass.

As a claim action is done during a turn your question is a bit confusing as you are using one game term in place of another. Can you make a claim action as your first turn? Certainly, but from then on you will have to pass while your opponent activates characters, re-rolls dice and deals damage to you with you only able to pass each turn. So you probably don't want to claim first turn, I have never seen it done.

As you play you'll start to see the claim action become a fairly tactical choice and sometimes claiming even when you have a dice in the pool is worth more than re-rolling.

So you can Claim battlefield even if you are in control of it this round?

Yes. You can claim even if you already control it.

where in the rules does it say that claiming the battlefield makes you pass until the round ends?

claim the battlefield

only one player can claim the battlefield each round. when you claim the battlefield, if you did not control it, take control of its by moving it next to your deck. you may use it ' claim' ability.

For the rest of this round, you automatically pass all of your future turns. Your opponent continues to take actions until they pass, butt they cannot claim the battlefield this round.

Rules reference page 14, "CL AIM THE BATTLEFIELD".

or in the starter set rule sheet page 2

Sorry for the delayed response, but thanks for the clarifications!
