Disney: Star Wars Galaxy's Edge

The Legacy blades were pretty nice. I almost bought one but did the droid thing.

Yes, I’m talking about the diameter of the hilt as well. As for the crystals at Galaxy’s Edge, they’re not opaque. They’re translucent . And do glow when in the hilt. The different color crystals also affect how the saber sounds, so the sabers don’t all sound the same. This is all accomplished through RF ID chips embedded within the crystals.

Also, the Savi’s lightsaber blades (also used by the “Legacy “ blades sold at Dok Ondar’s) do “scroll” when they activate and deactivate.

You're still voicing an uninformed preconception because you haven't held a Vader's vault combat class saber so lack a basis for making a comparison, i.e. stating a preference.

Opaque can still glow, if i put my hand over a strong flashlight, some of the light will make it through rather than between my fingers. That doesn't make my fingers translucent instead of opaque. You frequenlty have fringe interpretations of how words are used, and how you categorize things (which side of a line points in a continuum are on)

The savis saber blades didn't "scroll" in the videos I've watched. They don't look like this

https://youtu.be/44hJPpuAZkg

The problems with the crystal based soundfonts are A) very limited selection O(10) verses hundreds to thousands or more and B) you don't get to chose the blade color and soundfont separately. I don't know what the white crystal from Dok Ondar's sounds like but it's a safe bet it isn't a cross between a lightsaber hum and thunderstorm (e.g. isn't appropriate to a dragite gem). Btw cannon says crystals are naturally clear and get colored by the force user (kind of mood ring like) so for example a dragite gem lightsaber blade could be any color. Basically sound should not be determined by crystal color.

I went out and found this video

https://youtu.be/LIr8u0tWPGM

The savi's blades don't scroll ignite, they step ignite, granted they step ignite better than the $4 "space sword" saber I bought at Walmart for my son, but it's still step ignition rather than scrolling ignition. They also aren't very bright, you can barely see the color when the lights are on in the video, and when the lights are off they don't appear to have a white core (i.e. they aren't over saturating the camera).

Here https://youtu.be/vBJDWGZ6zOA a plecterpixel blade oversaturates the camera even in a brightly lit room.

Even the extreme glow $2.85 sabers oversaturate the camera

20180814-210404.jpg

That said I'm going to take my son to do the savi's workshop saber thing in 3 to 5 years... I was going to just be his plus one, but i could build one myself if you wanted it Mike (Tramp and I have known each other in real life for about 15 years, we squabble like "an old married couple" funny I've had 1 argument with my wife in the 4 years we've been married though we have had "discussions" on other occasions). What style of saber and color crystal would you want (I'm guessing a blue crystal).

The legacy saber hilts do look quite a bit nicer than the savi hilt in my opinion. Based on the videos I haven't been impressed by the blades, of course I'm comparing them to plecter pixel, but maybe they look better in person

Actually, I've seen and held a number of those types of lightsabers. I used to be a part of the Rebel Legion fan group some years back, and have personally seen the blades of other members up close, so, no, I'm not coming from an "uninformed preconception". And, as far as the sounds being determined by the crystal, that to fits with canon and Legends lore.

As for the crystals being opaque and still capable of glowing? By definition, opaque objects do not allow light to pass through them. Translucent objects do.

As for scrolling? Yes, they do. Watch this video here:

In particular, forward to 19:20. They do scroll on and off. The video also shows all of the sounds each of the different crystals produce.

Are you saying you've held Vader's vault combat class sabers, yes or no?

While sound is determined by crystal, the crystal's color is not. The crystal's color is determined by the wielder not the crystal. So that you can't pick a crystal that sounds how you want and also separately pick its color is not supported by the canon lore.

Opaque->translucent is a continuum. If you put a strong enough light behind anything, the light will pass through it, just because you can cut steel with a laser and a laser is light doesn't mean steel is translucent. Just because a strong flashlight can get a small amount of light through my hand doesn't make it translucent. A close up video reveals that the edges of the crystal are translucent but the core is opaque (it's how they hide the rfid chip), so we were both half right on that.

You apparently didn't understand that I was using "steps" is the plural of "step", as in there are discrete visible to the eye steps in the ignition and retraction of the savi's saber, blades .... I provided a video that documented that last night. The $4.xx "space sword" saber with sound that I got from Walmart steps ignites (3 steps in particular). Stepping is not scrolling. You need plecterpixel (more generally neopixel) for that. The difference is resolution and is analogous to the difference between the block number on older alarm clocks/calculators vs the high resolution screens on today's smartphones.

I've wielded a number of sabers of the same size and diameter. It doesn't matter what company made it. Most of your "combat quality" sabers have the same range of diameter hilts, consistent with the Graflex saber used by Luke in the movies. If something is completely opaque , no light passes through it. As for the crystal's color, regardless of how the crystal gets it color, the crystal's color is what determines the blade's color in the end. That's my point.

A movie accurate graflex with the grips is not a combat class by any stretch of the imagination.

Regarding your non point about the crystal's color, that doesn't change the fact that according to the lore you should be able to choose sound and crystal/blade color separately. I can do that on my saber you can't do it on a savi's.

There is a big difference between (merely) opaque and completely opaque. Because steel is not completely opaque to light/a laser, but by any reasonable definition it is opaque to light. It is a continuum and you have a tendency to place categorization lines at unreasonable locations in that continuum.

Greets,

Just returned from a special Disney Cast member's screening of the new SW Galaxy's Edge Theme park at Hollywood Studios, FL. Overall it was a fantastic experience that really immerses someone into the world of Star Wars for a few hours. A few notes:

  • They did a wonderful job with the props and re-creating the physical setting. Ships, speeders, Cantina's, Rebel bases, droids, merchant hutts, etc. The whole area looks like something you can find on a set of a SW movie.
  • Oga's Cantina - Fun experience. They ran out of the Blue Milk aka the Blue Bantha Milk.
  • Episode IV-VI and Episode VI-IX focus. Very little if any Prequel era attractions.
  • The Millennium Falcon ride is fun as heck. Six people ride at once with two people taking on specific roles. Pilot/Gunner/Engineer. Each person has to fulfill their aspect of the simulation otherwise the mission ends in failure. We really felt like we were in the Falcon being chased by the Empire. I rode the ride twice, playing the Engineer and Gunner roles. (I have bad motion sickness otherwise the Pilot role looks the most fun). Just before getting on the ride you have a quick opportunity to take a picture around the circular table that has space chess.
  • No Cosplaying - Disney does not want people to mistake attendees as Employees of the park. At least from what I know, no cosplaying around the rest of the park.
  • The place is a money pit. There are some cool things to purchase. The prices are very high. Even cast members will not be able to use their discounts when the area opens to the public. Personally, I do not blame Disney. People will spend the money when they attend. They might as well maximize profits.
  • Overall very fun: I can't imagine what the area will be like to kids once it opens. I'm an adult star wars fan (a non negative one, I used to be. I still hate the Last Jedi).

I'll try my best to answer any other questions. Cheers.

I'm gonna respond to each of these with my own experience at the one in Anaheim, CA.

1. Props and physical setting, amazing, felt like I was walking onto the Black Spire outpost and not just a themed set.

2. Cantina was great, drinks were amazing, I'm gonna try to recreate the T-16 Skyhopper at home as it is a very refreshing and fruity drink. Got blue milk at the stand earlier in the day, also quite refreshing. The food at Docking Bay 7 was good, but not great or amazing, so if there is a next time, I might skip the food at Batuu (or at least get a different meal, got the Smoked Kaadu Ribs).

3. There is definitely prequel era merch but yeah the park is set in the canon timeline after episode 8 I believe, so factions are First Order, Resistance, Scum like Hondo Onaka.

4. Millennium Falcon is super fun but mostly on-rails and the sensitivity of the piloting is basically non-responsive until you go to the extreme, and then the falcon goes to the extreme. We may have hit an asteroid, but it's not my fault!!! *Narrator* It was his fault.

5. No cosplaying but you can do "Disney Bounding" aka regular every day outfits that are inspired by characters in star wars. My group went as Rey, Chewbacca, Rebel Pilot, fairly certain we got more interaction with cast members because we were dressed up more than just a Star Wars T-Shirt.

6. Yep, prices are high, count the cost before you take a trip, prepare your mind. Menus for food and drink are on Disney's websites including costs, there are youtube reviewers for toys that tell you the costs for the merch you can get, I ended up spending more than I planned out because I had a lot of fun (also because they sold out of blue kyber crystals at Doc Ondar's Den of Antiquities, so I compensated by buying every other color besides the red one I chose during construction).

7. Amazing experience. Reserve your cantina and savi's workshop experiences ahead of time (you can do so up to 2 weeks in advance on the Disney website).

As a couple extras, we had a blast interacting with the characters as we're into roleplaying (hmm I wonder whyyy). Sabacc is a great deal for the price if you're a fan of poker/blackjack (plays like a mix of the two). Chewie and I made datapads out of our phone cases, the cast were quite enamored with them at Savi's workshop.

Can you post pics of the data pad phone cases?

Here's mine. Not up to me on posting my friend's datapad.

I was told on the Galaxys Edge subreddit that I was lucky to get one in with that many exposed wires. *shrugs* I might have put the phone in the security checkpoint tray screen-up, so it's possible they didn't notice as they didn't touch the phone.

Be careful with how much you customize it. If it looks too "real", with reall electronic components, Disney is likely to confiscate it. They did that to Dan-O's (from Youtube) cell phone case because it included real circuit boards and the like.

Well like I said, I made it through with no problems. YMMV.
