I don't know if someone has posted this before, but what is your favorit monster ( in coolness)??? mine is a star spawn ![]()
Favorite Monsters
Aside from the ones that give away presents in some form (Mi-Go: treasure, Nightgaunt: free ride):
Color out of Space and Star Vampire both thrill me to see. They are scary both conceptually and mechanically.
Non-Mask:

Very well designed.
Mask:

Simple, elegant, deadly.
I think I'll go with the Star Spawn too, it looks awesome on the picture. Way better than the Star Spawn in "CoC: DCotE". The God of the Bloody Tongue is awesome as well, always thrilling when this guy is roaming the streets...
I like the TRUE stalkers: the Hound of Tindalos and the Hunting Horror. Sure, they're not the hardest things to kill, but I love to watch them blip across the board, usually ruining your next Movement Phase.
If we're just talking appearance, I love the Star Vampire (creepy!), the Elder Thing (nifty under-lighting with blues and purples), and the Moon Beast (delightfully gross, and with a true life model, the Star-Nosed Mole!). I would throw out an Honorable Mention to the Witch and the Goat Spawn...but that would be wrong.
Also, come to think of it, mask monsters are cool. Tibs, I thought your fav would be the dark pharoh!!!!! i don't know why, but some of the Mask monsters I have don't say endless, so could I actually claim them as monster trophies, or are they misprints? and also about the Wraith monster. It is Nightmarish I, and when you fail the check you lose one sanity. What's the difference? Either way you lose one sanity.
Your Masks are misprints. All Masks are supposed to be Endless. The English print of The Beast is missing this text as well (I stickered it on). :-D

Eh, when I see a "what's your favorite/the strongest monster" thread, I automatically disregard Mask and Spawn monsters because they are specialized.
My favorite spawn is probably the Dunwich Horror, because I was conditioned to fearing him if he awoke. My favorite Mask is probably... hrm, I'd have to say the Shadowy Figure, because he's the only one that both actively slows the sealing process, but actually indirectly helps Nyar in final combat!
Dark Pharaoh is far from my favorite. He doesn't have the coolest picture or best ability; he has no abnormal movement and isn't impossibly strong or deadly. In fact, his "Lore" ability has caused the most confusion over all the masks, as people have wondered how to apply Lore as a base for combat. However, you know I'll continue to love the Dark Pharaoh expansion and the herald ![]()
thx for the explanation, because I got so confused. sometimes my friends always want the game easy, and if we start losing, or seem to lose, they whine. I kept insisting that they were Endless, but my friends disagreed. They are trying to avoid to ugly truth!
also, I was looking at your signature, Tibs, so I thought you loved everything about the dark pharoh, but I guess its just the expansion. o yeah, and I still don't know what to do with the Wraith. Is it a misprint, or do others have it? I was thinking maybe the sanity loss would be two and it still has Nightmarish I. well, that was a "house rule" whenever I encountered it.

Oh, sorry. Slipped my mind. Yeah I've been a defender of the expansion because a lot of people dislike it for some of its weird language and vague rules scenarios. I still regard it as one of the best themed expansions to date (plus I have a lot of sentimentality attached to it).
Anyway, about the Wraith, yes it appears to have 1 sanity loss and Nightmarish 1. The only possible reconciliation I have is with regards to an Ally or other ability that prevents Nightmarish loss. In that case there would be a benefit to passing the check. Perhaps there's also an item that cancels all sanity loss incurred by failing a Horror check, but at just one sanity, what's the point?
The monster that always makes me jump for joy when it's drawn from the monster cup is, as my sig suggests, the Mi-Go. As soon as it hits the board, we take up our torches and pitchforks and go Mi-Go hunting.
As far as combat goes, my favorite is probably the Werewolf. It keeps out of sight and attacks you from the shadows. It's not the toughest monster out there, but it's still a decent threat, and if you want to eliminate it, then you the player, have to hunt IT down. A nice little switch from the norm.
But the baddest mama-jama out there, in my opinion, is the Servitor of the Outer Gods. This thing is a beast. Once it hits the sky, we lock our doors and avoid the streets like the plague. Eventually though, when the monsters start getting out of control, someone has to go and deal with it. Then all they can hope is that the Servitor doesn't choose to descend upon them.
