Environment Cards! (TLDR: I like them!)

By C Vic20, in X-Wing

Not going to lie - the environment cards are the number one reason I am going to buy one of each card pack. The pilots one I would have bought anyway, but the others really are all about the environment stuff for me. Very exciting to have that incorporated into standard xwing. I’d like to see it become something that always happens at a tournament.

I am ok with objective based play being limited to epic or unannounced campaigns and standard always being dogfight. I will play both absolutely.

I'm sure people will complain they have to buy the environment pack to play in said tournament, but that comes with just about anything.

They're also $15 at full MSRP, and will likely be discounted in many places. That's cheaper than some tournament entry fees, and much cheaper than transportation if you're a dedicated tourney player.

Oh, no doubt, but you've been around here a while. PEOPLE WILL COMPLAIN.

I mean, it's definitely not like making people buy an entirely new core set just for the new damage deck, right? OP has done this kind of thing before but this would be much tamer and most people would prefer it anyway.

I do agree that "No environment card, 6 standard obstacles" should be one allowed scenario. In which case maybe you get to bring all six obstacles. Still seems like a good deal.

Or just have players choose three obstacles on their sheet for Standard format games, but also mark a box to indicate that you are bringing an Environment. Environment selection is not required. However, anyone choosing to bring one must provide all object tokens needed for that Environment, in addition to their three Standard obstacles.

This would solve two issues:

1) It puts the burden of ensuring you have all necessary tokens for an Environment on the player bringing the card, so it doesn't penalize players who haven't bought those packs.

2) If you don't want to use a special environment or don't own the pack, you can just bring three standard objects and you're still fine for the tourney.

I'd be okay with them introducing it as a required component (I know a fair number of people might not be)

The only thing I would ask is that ffg actually make sure that they print enough of these to cover demand;

If I hear tales of people not being able to play tournaments because they can't get their hands on these packs.......

I think this will help out tremendously. Other game systems have multiple win conditions or ways to score points. Malifaux has a main objective and the you pick two out of five schemes. When 40k went to objectives in the game got better.

I am all for the environment being part of the standard game. Bid can pick either initiative or environment. Alot like how destiny works.

I approve of this. I would say permit both (anyone who is bringing an environment will have at least 3 legal obstacles anyway from the cards we’ve seen thus far).

The winning bid chooses first player, the losing bid chooses environment. The environment is one of the provided cards or “standard” (each bring 3 for 6 obstacles).

Thanks for catching me up on what I missed. I approve of these. I hope they get added to all tournament games.

I’ve added all the fully and partially spoiled environments cards to my online card browser . You can click the top drop-down and jump right to Environment Cards (it’s near the bottom of the list). Here’s what I’ve found:

2 fully spoiled:

Asteroid Shower

Minefield

4 partially spoiled:

Clouzon-36 Deposits

Countdown

Recent Wreckage

Unexploded Ordnance

If anyone has more information, please let me know so I can share it. I’m very pumped about these environment cards!

I haven't played X-Wing since the CAC earlier this year. I just got burned out and have been taking time off, working on my mini-painting backlog on the days I would have normally gone to X-Wing League Night down at the FLGS.

Huge Ships and Environments are legit the reasons I am getting interested in X-Wing again. I look forward to going back down and seeing how these freshen up the game. From looking at the environments so far spoiled, it really looks like they are going to bring some interesting situations, and perhaps stop the game from being "solved".

What was it said about a Scenario or several Scenarios being part of one/all the Card Packs? Or are the Environments considered Scenarios?
