Preventing Facedown Damage (or Fear)

I'm a little confused about how this works. If you have some garb that prevents one facedown damage or fear, how is this done exactly? It seems a little messy to me.

Sometimes you will be instructed to "Suffer one facedown fear", say. Obviously the garb would prevent that.

But what if you are instructed to "Suffer two fear"? If I understand correctly, you have to look at the face of the fear card and resolve it. If you look at the card and it says "Turn this card facedown", does that mean you can then prevent it?

Obviously if it says "Keep this card faceup", you can't prevent it.

If it says "Discard a prepared ability, then turn this card facedown", what then? I'm guessing you can't prevent it. Or do you you discard the prepared ability, and then prevent the fear card?

Am I playing this correctly, or will the garb only prevent fear if you are specifically instructed "Suffer facedown fear"?

It only works when it is specifically stated that the fear/damage is face down. Flipping it face down occurs after it has been received.

Okay, thanks, I guess that makes sense. Specifically suffering facedown fear doesn't come up very often though, it's fairly rare.
