I wonder if it would be much more feasible to use an SSD on a warhammer 40k sized mat instead of the smaller 3x6 mats of Armada. That extra foot might mean the difference between turning or going off the board with a reasonable margin for error. What do you guys think?
Using 4x6 mats with an SSD?
Officially no. Unofficially any size that can be agreed upon works. I plan on using a 4x8 playing area.
It takes up more space but its not moving any faster. I think 3foot should be fine in the standard 6 rnd game. However if you do use the extra foot, add 6 inches to each deployment zone so objective balance is mostly the same. they often rely on a certain distance between the players.

maybe up the obstacles count by a third or so too because of the extra play area. (so 8 instead of 6)
If it is only because of the SSD, there is alternate rule that you can use.
Just use the normal deployment rule (within distance 3). But use the special rule, that the SSD is not destroyed when any part of his base is outside the map, as long as it is on the deployment zone.
This way the SSD will be placed within the same range as any other ship. It will just look out on the deployment zone.
But don't forget that the SSD is being played different to the other ships. With this rule he need to change the speed and do more navigate commands more than he would with the original rules.
Would having a bigger play area not mean that the enemy being farther away means they are potentially in your front arc for longer. Being a disadvantage? Also making slower ships, Victory, pelta, Bwings, etc more out of the fight for longer? As they have to travel farther.
I should probably rephrase my comment, I plan on mostly/only using my SSD in 600+ point games and therefore will want to use a bigger table. If I was using it in a 400 point game I would use a normal sized table.
If somebody manages to fly their SSD off the far side of the table I’ll give them a cookie.
For bigger games, I’d go wider and not deeper. Deeper just means you take an extra 1-2 turns to start shooting.
