After the starter - New Player

By Rockbeatsscissor, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hi. I just recently picked up the core set. My question is where should i start from there? Should I just go down the list, starting with whatever the first exp is ( I have no idea, and the online store doesn't list them in order). On the other hand should I focus on the packs that help out my faction, Baratheon? One more and i'll be done; I saw that they made packs in the same fashion as MTG so should I bother trying to collect the randoms or Im I mistaken. Thanks in advance.

Probably a good place to start for general collection expansion is with the full deck expansion boxes. Kings of the Sea has a Greyjoy deck and Princes of the Sun has a Martell deck. Also, in the near future, Lords of Winter will have a new Stark deck. They won't help your Baratheon deck too much though (they will allow you to use all the Martell and Greyjoy cards you pick up in chapter packs though).

Beyond that, I'd recommend picking a cycle of chapter packs and buying it up in order (rather than buying packs from a few different cycles). The general themes are kings and armies (A Clash of Arms), Summer/Winter (A Time of Ravens), Shadows (Kings Landing Edition), and Night's Watch/Wildling (Defenders of the North). Of those, I'd personally recommend Kings Landing Edition as a set with nice cards for your Baratheon deck (though it's debatable which sets help which houses most). All the chapter packs come with preset cards which are pretty evenly divided amongst the houses so it's difficult to pick up cards for one house without getting cards for all the houses (unless you split things with friends who are building other houses).

The randomized booster packs like MTG are from when the game was a CCG. It has since switched to an LCG, which means that there are no more randomized products - everything is preset.

There are a few chapter packs that people tend to recommend to new players. I don't have time to go into all of that right now, but you can find it all already written some previous threads I've linked below.

Here are some previous threads:

As a new player, I would advise against getting the older booster. While some of the cards have been reprinted in the LCG, there are going to be much larger numbers that are not LCG "legal," and as such won't be part of the normal organized play or tournament scene, nor it the design of the game taking those previous cards into effect when new sets come along. They make for a different play experience, but for the most part they are "obsolete."

I would also recommend starting with the Kings Landing edition packs. This is a strong expansion cycle, and introduces a number of really good cards and options for Baratheon. Also, if you can find our which Chapter Pack has Seat of Power in it, as it is a great Baratheon card, and pick that one up. Ancient Enemies, from the first LCG cycle "Clash of Arms" contains "Fury of the Stag," a 5 gold 7 initiative 1 claim plot (and similar Furies for the other houses) so is worth picking up as well.

Awesome. Thanks for the swift replies. Thanks for the list lich i'll check those out. Jones that helped a lot, the ccg was confusing me and they were even listed in the starter box rule book. Maybe i just found an older copy.
