How Many Stupid Mistakes Do You Average Per Game?

By Boom Owl, in X-Wing

It depends on how many games I play. If it is just a game or a 3 game tournament i will usually make 1 to 2 mistakes (per game). But if it's more than 3 it starts to snowball.

In the past I have tried to mitigate errors by running less demanding lists. I think that might compound my mistakes because I am not as familiar with those ships so this year I'm going to see if I'm better off running a more demanding list.

I'm good for probably 1-2 mistakes per match, however looking back on anything considered an "upper tier tournament" or in cut rounds and I can point out the mistake I made in each tournament that definitely cost me the tournament. I really try hard to not make irrecoverable mistakes, however history has always proven me unable to overcome this.

These are things like:
had I gone with my plan and remembered to barrel roll I wouldn't have jammed up my entire swarm
or... had I decloaked whisper like I planned, I wouldn't have landed her so perfectly on a rock that she couldn't even decloak the turn after
Or more recently... had I stuck to my plan for Duchess I might have a worlds invite.

I guess I should go with the ol' Leeroy Jenkins bit and write "STICK TO THE PLAN, CHUMS" on the back of my hand. Maybe on a template. Hmm...

Definitely in the 1 per round category. Its not always exactly 1 per round ofc but its close.

Ive noticed as I play less often these days mistakes are more common.

I average 1-2 per round. Sometimes my mistake is so bad it wraps back around to appearing genius!

Biggest mistake I make is every round is picking up the dice. I should never pick up dice...

probably like 0.33. Not saying I play perfectly but I feel like I can make it through 1-2 games without going full-on face to palm "why the heck did I do that" type of mistakes. I feel like the majority of my mistakes nowadays are the type that aren't obvious. It definitely increases when Im playing a list or ship I'm not familiar with, like I played multiple games on release weekend with the N1 where I forgot to use Juke or Passive Sensors at the correct time and had to start playing with the cards next to the ships.

Right there with you. Sure I make some bad decisions. But the, "What have I done?!" mistakes tend to be few and far between.

I've been playing since 2012, and usually stick to my favorite ships, so the good news is that it gets better if you keep practicing/playing.

2 as in too many.

All kidding aside, one of the reasons I am now only focusing on one or two factions (Republic and Resistance) is to pick a list or two that I find fun to fly. Then practice those lists, tweaking as I go along, until I become very proficient at flying them competitively. Trying to fly different list combinations among four factions seemed to keep me from growing as a player. From my observations, the most successful players have their goto list because they know how it works inside and out. They occasionally fly other lists to spice things up a bit and keep from being board.

Trying to get my phone's touch screen to work resulted in an inadvertent quote and post. So, more mistakes? ;)

Cav Scout here is right, but... so many ships, gotta fly them all!

Usually a couple. Not very experienced in the game yet

So once every few games dial in wrong manoeuvre to what I wanted to do.

Every game hit an obstacle

Every game have a turn in which I bump my own units unintentionally

And sometimes I trust to much in the dice :(

To reference another @Boom Owl post, I'm bad at X-Wing because I rarely play the same list a second time in real life. I'll practice a dozen times or more in FlyCasual, but the AI isn't the same as a real opponent. Actually getting to the table is difficult for me so each time I do I'll usually have a different list or five that I want to play, so I can't learn from my mistakes as well.

If I played tournaments I'd probably get better much faster 😛

While FlyCasual is nowhere near perfect, I do like to try lists out on it before putting them on the table. The simulator helps me understand pilot abilities and ship upgrades. Also, FlyCasual helps me better understand ship movements. While a real game is much different, I feel a little bit better prepared.
