Caved in and bought it....how complicated is it?

By daddystabz, in Tannhauser

I finally caved and picked up a copy of this game last night while awaiting the new rulebook. In just glancing through a quick reference sheet of the rules I found over at Headless Hollow this game looks quite complicated. This is but a first glance but I'm wondering how complicated those of you out there think it is for a very experienced gamer?

My group is currently playing a Road to Legend campaign for Descent. How complicated is Tannhauser compared to that? Or compared to other games like Twilight Imperium, Fury of Dracula, or Forumla D.

Wow....no opinions?

Actually I'm suprised you havn't had a response, I don't feel qualified to give you an answer. as I do not play any of the games you listed.

I will say this, download the new rules sample on the Tannhauser support page, I was able to intergrate them fairly easily, and they streamline the combat system. Also if you start playing with them now, you won't develope as many bad Tann-Habits.

Played my first game tonight and it wasn't that hard at all. There were only a few minor sticking points with the rules (grenades) that forced a debate, but overall it was a great time. I'm sure with repeat playing it will get easier and easier.

So, to answer your question- it's not that complicated. Just take some time to familiarize yourself with the rules and be patient with your first game and it should be fine.

sorry mate, must reply sooner, lol, no i dont find it difficult at all, there are problems with how the rules are worded sometimes because of the translation, and some times it takes a bit of reading through, but we have all played it for years and you soon get round to it, the new rules (taster) peice will help to clarify and make some things easier, you can implement them or stick with the old rules its your choice.

after you have played a few games you will start to get the hang of it no problem im sure :)

I agree with this. When we played, I had the original rule book in one hand and the revised "teaser" in the other. It was clunky at first but we were both learning at the same time. I can see getting a little frustrated but this is still a great game with a lot of potential to get better.

The game mechanics are pretty easy to get a hold on. The Pathfinder system handily clears up line of sight questions without sacrificing the beautiful "cluttered old house" artwork. Playing the Union has a bigger learning curve than playing the Reich, so don't surprised if the Krauts win the first few games you play. Once you figure out how to use the Union forces, things will even out.

Edit: I'm speaking of the original rules here, not FFG's 2.0 rules. I haven't had a chance to try those out yet, even from the "sneak peak" they released a little while back.
