Will we ever see the core box leaders individually packaged?

By schuwa, in Star Wars: Legion

So my 13 y/o son wants to get his own Legion army and he’s leaning toward the Galactic Republic army. The trouble is: (a) we don’t need more measuring tools or dice and even more importantly (b) he is planning on spending his own money on the models and so getting units in a Core Set that he won’t use (the Separatists) is a little jarring for a teenager, especially since you need one to get Obi-Wan .

i know the argument of trying to find someone local to split a box set - I’ve sent out messages to the local groups and no takers so far.

I’d just like to see some discussion on this topic, as a miniature gamer who typically focuses on one faction, and see if I am in the minority. Do other people wish for the core box set models to be released as individual models? (And I mean the true core set models, not the new Operative models which are different rule sets).

Hey, shoot me a PM

A second core box is the most cost effective way to build an army. Sell the other faction online, probably pay for itself; if you can't find someone to split one.

You always need more dice, it is like cowbell.

This is 100% true. It's a heavy amount all at once especially for a teenager, but, the value is superior to doing it piece meal to start. Maybe you or whoever can "find" some extra things for him to do for cash that would make it easier to buy a 2nd core, and wouldn't make him feel like it was a hand-out. Plenty of lawns to be mowed?

Also, it took me forever to find an adequate amount of dice.

This is an obstacle for alot of players, but it is great for ffg as they get to sell more sets and with more core sets out there it's harder for People to sell them 2nd hand.

My son also plays so I have to get enough of each faction and with our broad range of games we are slowly catching up on Legion, still missing 6 skus and still need some multiple of some units. I need to save for the new cores as we will need 2 as we both want to play the new factions.

Honestly, they just need to include the core set command cards, unit card and upgrade cards for Vader/Luke in their respective operative expansion.

Problem solved by adding about 6 more cards to the pack

Hmm... 2 Trooper squads, a Support, and a Commander has an MSRP of $88. That's $2 less than the GCW core set, and $12 less than the Clone Wars core set. The dice pack and barricades make up for that, but if you've already got dice sets beyond the first two aren't as necessary, and you may not want any more barricades if you've got a good terrain setup.

While it shouldn't be hard to find a buyer on the secondary market for the droids, I can see why your son would be frustrated. Still, the steep discount built into the core set makes an independent release of the commanders kind of a niche product.

Last time I was looking on Ebay there were a few Vaders and Lukes available, likely due to people buying 2 core sets to build there armies. It would be nice to have a single army or leader option, but as Squark pointed out, it is about the same price to buy the box even if you just want one army.

I'd split the box for separatists if you want to PM me I'm sure we can work something out

I might have one not sure yet. If I do I'll just send it too you

Honestly, picking up the commander and cards from the core set on the secondary market might be possible, especially as more than a few people on here are likely picking up two+ cores and will have spare commanders lying around (I know I'm planning on getting two). Some people are likely to use them for conversions, some might list them on eBay. It might also be worth seeing if local players will even just have a spare Obi-wan and his relevant cards, even if they don't want to split the box.

Edit: I'm in the camp of spending $12 more than list for a complete spare army is a decent deal. If you can unload them, great, decent discount. If not, it's a loaner army for getting one of your kid's friends hooked, and sell it to that kid :P.

Not on a timeline that will work for your teenager. In 3 or 4 years if the game is still selling well, is my guess.

It would be faster to buy a core set and sell his unwanted models on eBay if you can't find anyone to trade with. Fantasy Flight sells the original starter's for only $70 on Amazon. I'd guess the Cone Wars one will be similarly discounted by them. On black friday/cyber monday FFG was selling them for only $50.

Because there aren't enough people saying the same thing in here....

I was just going to suggest if he's buying it at a Local Game Store that has a Legion presence he might be able to talk to the owner/employees about buying the Separatists right back from him immediately, so he doesn't have to save up the whole $90 right away? Maybe not, but it seems worth a shot if you can't find a better option.

FFG selling tabletop wargames just like board games as obligatory core games with expansions was one of many nails in Runewars' coffin. That said, it is a steep purchase all at once, but buying a minimum size army costs about as much and you do effectively end up getting half of the figures for free, so unless you have a deep aversion to selling off stuff you don't want, your son won't ever get a more cost-efficient deal out of FFG.

I bought a Luke and Vader for less than $10 on eBay (with tokens and cards). There are deals out there if you’re able to look.

I suspect clone wars will be even easier in this regard because the core units are going to be an even bigger staple of those armies. I’m contemplating buying 3 myself...

Yeah, I think looking on craigslist or kijiji or some Legion forums or Facebook pages is the best bet. I bought 3 core sets and sold off what I didn’t want through my local Legion FB page. I included Luke and Vader and all their cards in the list of things to sell off, but no one wanted those. I’m sure there are a lot of people out there with extra like me, willing to let them go for cheap, but you’ll have to ask around. The biggest problem for me is, I wasn’t willing to ship (Canada Post is wildly expensive).
