Angled Deflectors on K-Wings

By Kehl_Aecea, in X-Wing

I've been toying with a new list and wondering if being able to reinforce on the K-Wing would be worth the points.

Thoughts?

First thought... 'but then you would not have offensive modifiers!'

Second thought... 'but bombs!'

There's always target locks and token sharing :D

Key word: "The"

I wouldn't put multiple Ks with reinforce, but one, maybe.

Oh, yeah, that's the plan!

Miranda would have the Angled Deflectors, Han Gunner, Proton Bombs and barrage rockets, followed by Esege With Perceptive Copilot, Proton Bombs. barrage rockets, and skilled bombardier. Not sure what to finish off the list with. I have 56 points to play with so my thoughts are Wedge with Marksmanship , a Grey Squadron Y-Wing or even a couple Z-95s, but leaning HARD towards Wedge... maybe another X-Wing pilot with a few upgrades?

I kinda think probably not. Playing around with the Gate of Storms damage calculator ( http://xwing.gateofstorms.net/2/ship_durability/?d=AQABAAAAgBEA&a=BAYAAA ), Angled Deflectors K-Wings only take about an extra focused 3-red dice attack to die, compared to a K-Wing with a Shield Upgrade, like 6.9 instead of 5.7 attacks. About 10 rather than 9 for 2-red focused attacks. Doesn't seem that impactful to me. The difference is smaller against harder-hitting attacks, 3.7 vs 3.3 for 4-dice Focus/Lock shots.

The two big things which hold me back from Angled Deflectors are: [1] You're pretty much starting two health down, 8 HP vs 10. I think adding a health upgrade is a fair assumption, since the context is someone willing to spend 6 on AngD, so the presumption of spending 3 or 4 on Hull or Shield seems fair. [2] Jyn Erso exists. An Evade token on a K-Wing isn't as good as Reinforce, but it's not too far worse, but Jyn works for any ship at 0-3 who wants an Evade token.

Meanwhile, it does get in the way of offensive actions. No Focus for Barrage Rockets, for example.

Very few ships want angle deflectors ATM, it will come down in price I'm sure. As @theBitterFig has said, it costs 2 more than a shield upgrade, so you spend two points to be two shield down???? And get no benefit until while reinforced you block at least three damage that you would not have blocked with focus, this card is not for me but kudos for looking at work around.

Definitely a card for pilots who can get passive mods/extra tokens.

This is a big point that often gets missed when discussing Angled Deflectors.

People often mention the fact the card asks you to pass on offensive mods, but they often miss that your standard defensive mod would have done the exact same thing a fair amount of the time. And in those situations you've paid points and a shield to quite literally do nothing.

And even for most of those pilots, better is to learn how to play them better so you don't need to Reinforce in the first place.

Why would you ever put a mod that isn’t Advanced Slam on a K-Wing? 😛

Delayed Fuses seems really handy.
