Destiny Points and Equipment

The rules state that players can spend Destiny Points to retcon useful items into their inventories, like hydrospanners or macrobinoculars. Do these items then stay with them for the rest of the campaign, without being paid for? Do they have to spend a Destiny Point every time they want to use it again?

If you allow this, you make the Utility Belt talent far less attractive unless you strictly limit the items they can pull fron the scenery. Letting a PC pull a fire extinguisher or breath mask from an emergency supply hatch on a ship is probably ok if the scene requires them. Using the DP just to acquire loot is a no-go.

We have played it as: yes, the equipment stays with them. And, no, they do not have to spend Destiny to use it again. It's there. It's been created.

You limit the value of an item which they're allowed to "produce". But yea, 1 Destiny Point is worth 100 cred or less in my book. Sure. Especially if it keeps the story movinf forward, and gives me the opportunity to pull more devious crap.

What's the point of being that stingy?

They should spend the credits for the item if you are gonna do that.

I always believed the rule states that when you DP flip for an item you must pay the credit cost. I also rule it should either be temporary use and/or a pretty common item. *flip* "Hey, remember back when we were at that one shop and I totally bought these regular macrobinoculars for 75cr?"

"Utility Belt" not only waves the credits but gives the GM less veto power. "Oh yeah, I definitely have always had these custom, specialty, night vision macrobinoculars."

I allow those items to hang around.

However, this comes with the caveat that as the GM I not only have the right to veto the DP spend, but that the items in question need to have a base Rarity of 0 or 1 (pretty much, items that are incredibly common). The rules themselves say that the GM has to approve the DP spend, to prevent players from just spending the points willy-nilly or saying they have suddenly have items that make no sense for where the player currently is.

And before anyone bellyaches about this making the Utility Belt talent useless, the talent itself removes the GM's veto power, which can be quite useful as it lets the player say "I have this item that makes this scene a lot easier for me to resolve!" and a petty GM can't just shoot it down.

I let them hang around, but I only let them spend it on things that are actually relevant to the scene at hand or if the plot has grounded to a near halt.

I too let them hang around, but I also limit it to "solutions" and not "gear."

If the players seriously need a specific item like a breathmask, space suit, or what have you, it better to d-point it and move on than go all the way back to Coruscant or whatever to get it. But no using D-points to get an item you merely want, or intentionally opted not to bring, planning to spend a d-point instead.

The way I run it, they got to retcon that earlier they actually did buy the items (deduct credits retroactively) and then they get to keep it because they paid credits for it.
