Question: Heroes Opting to Retreat vs Cavalry

By awayputurwpn, in Battlelore

I can't find this anywhere on the site, so I'm assuming the question hasn't been asked yet. It came up on a recent game I played and I wasn't sure how to handle it.

The rules for Heroes state that when a Champion survives a melee attack, he can, instead of battling back, opt to retreat 1-3 squares (pg 7).

If a Champion being attacked by a mounted unit chooses to retreat instead of battling back in this circumstance, can the mounted unit then make the normal follow-on actions (Gain Ground, Pursuit, Battle again)? Or do those actions only apply when the retreating unit is forced to retreat?

Are any follow-on actions allowed in the case of the Champion who opts to retreat? Or does the retreat effectively end the battle?

Granted, I haven't actually played with Heroes yet, so there may be exceptions that I am not aware of (and I am still confused about some of the interactions between Heroes and the "normal" game), but if the Champion retreats, either by choice or force, the attacking unit will be eligible for follow-on actions - just like in any other similar situation. The potential for follow-on actions can often impact such decisions :)
