Range Measuring Question

By JBFancourt, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, I am shooting HLC:

(1) I am obstructed in the Bullseye, but not otherwise in my V arc. Is the shot obstructed?

I think yes.

(2) I am at Range 3 in the Bullseye, but Range 2 in my V arc. Is the shot Range 3?

I think yes.

VS.

If it was Soontir Fel with Predator:

(1) I think no.

(2) I think no.

And you would still get the Predator re-roll.

Right? Wrong?

  1. For the Heavy Laser Cannon example, the firing arc is specifically defined as bullseye, so that is the only place where your actual firing line can be measured Therefore:
    1. The attack would be obstructed , if your limited firing line (the bullseye) crosses an obstacle, even if you could otherwise draw a shorter line at the opponent.
    2. The attack would be at Range 3 , because that's the measured range per the firing arc.
  2. For Soontir Fel , only Predator looks at the bullseye, and it doesn't care about obstructions. Therefore, since you measure your attack line across your entire firing arc:
    1. Your attack is unobstructed as long as the shortest line, inside the attack arc, doesn't cross an obstacle.
    2. The attack range is measured independent of bullseye, so in your example, it would be Range 2. But, regardless of the actual line of fire, as long as the target was within your bullseye (and no farther than Range 3), you are indeed going to get your Predator roll.

In short: You're correct on all counts!

I'll also add that it's Soontir Fel/Predator-like for T-70s with their S-Foils closed. Closed S-Foils Nien Nunb at range 1, even if the bullseye doesn't reach until range 2, is still a 4-dice primary attack.

Basically, the key is the kind of arc on the weapon. Heavy Laser Cannon, Proton Rockets, and the upcoming Nantex fighter primary weapon all are actual Bullseye-arc "ll" weapons, and what matters is range and obstruction in the bullseye arc.

For Soontir Fel, Predator, T-70 S-Foils, and pretty much any other effect: bullseye becomes a true/false test, without concern for obstruction or range within the bullseye arc (well, other than the fact that the bullseye arc doesn't extend past range 3). Their attacks will be based with the weapons arc (usually a front "V" arc, but there are exceptions, like RZ-2 A-Wings who use a turret arc and can still Crack Shot), which isn't a bullseye arc.

Funny thing is.... I shot the HLC 😝 🙄

So, I gave him 2 extra defense dice and I only got 1 extra attack die. I should have just shot primary.

Hey, I was just excited I had a ship in my ll Arc. Lol.

Thanks!
