Bryar pistol

By Enjeryuu, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Sadly, we haven't seen the classic and iconic sidearm of the EU in any of the rule books. Has anyone tried stating up this one themselves? Or hasn't, but has ideas of how they would?

I'd just call it as reskin and let my player call his Heavy Blaster Pistol Bryar Pistol

It would have accurate and an overcharde valve

We used a DL-7H Heavy Blaster Pistol with an Overcharge valve.

It kinda depends on which version you look at too. It's been represented as everything from a slugthrower->blaster conversion, to just a decent pistol, to a sawed off rifle.

The backstory of it all is actually kinda neat when you look at the evolution of video game content and mechanics, but it make importing it a pain.

I knew of the sawed off rifle description, but I hadn't heard the slugthrower->blaster one. It's part of the reason I've curious how other people have handled it.

Like I said, kinda neat story.

Originally Lucas Arts (Lucasfilm's in-house video game developer/publisher) was working on an original game... don't recall the title but it was going to be more a cyberpunk/film noir style shooter, with a kind of Bladerunner thing going on. As typically happened back then, LA original content games would get cancelled and redone as Star Wars titles. So as a result the game switched, but it looks like they used the Bryar as a head nod, leaving it's look to have a Bladerunner pistol inspiration and giving the backstory that it was originally a slugthrower and had been converted to a blaster. Indeed in DF and even in DF2 the Bryar clearly resembles a revolver. In the final game it was the weakest weapon, but also the most accurate.

By the time Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight came around the mouse as control scheme became common, and that meant a spare button, and the ability to set weapons with an alternate fire mode. Thus the Bryar got the "charged shot" upgrade.

Now it's time for Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast. It was around this time that LA started to reduce in-house development, and instead would license out individual projects, while still being the Publisher. Raven worked on JK2, making a pretty good game to be honest. But... they were also trying to save money. The Bryar caused an issue, it's small size and unusual shape compared to all the other weapons required a different pose, which meant more animations and pose sequences to make it work, which meant paying people to make those. So... they cheated. They extended the weapon's length, and replaced the grip with a 1911 style grip. By making it roughly the same size as the E-11 and with a similar grip, they no longer needed unique poses and animations for the Bryar, they could use the same ones used for all other weapons. But... people need an explanation of everything, so the sawed-off rifle story came about.

As later material came out the weapon was dropped back down to pistol size, but the 1911 grip remained.

So there ya go... Listing it as a slugthrower, an accurate blaster pistol, a accurate pistol with an overcharge valve, and a sawed off rifle can all be correct... from a certain point of view.

When the Bryar pistol got official stats for the first time for the D20 Star Wars RPG it was not more powerful than a sporting/light blaster pistol but it had a much greater range (200 meters vs. 80 meters). In D20 SAGA it was only as strong as a sporting blaster pistol, too, but could charge up a shot for a bonus damage die.

Maybe it would be more fitting to base its stats on a light blaster pistol than on a heavy blaster pistol? I think I would make the bryar's stats up as a light blaster pistol with accurate and range: long and modify it with an overcharge valve. Or just use the stats of the X-30 Lancer (but with a stun setting) and put an overcharge valve on it.
