Diplomatic Campaigns

By mwknowles, in Game Masters

Hi all,

I'm playing with the idea of how to write and run a campaign based around diplomacy and personality plots but keep it interesting for the ugg characters AND also relevant to a plot.

Background: I run a campaign where the characters are imperials (playing the opposite to most games here) set between Empire and Jedi (but with the intention of going on into EU) The characters are a black ops group running high risk missions but are now getting to a decent rank where they can influence more than just a mission. I am fixing the fall of the Empire and the destruction of the second Death Star and will write games to be played in the chaos post this. One aspect would be the ex-imperial systems siding with the old ways of the empire and refusing to go New Republic (I wont be doing the easy and simple good v evil idea, but a more "different ideology" and the Empire is just a government and not everyone is evil in is (a lot like WW2 Germany)) So i want to have a lot of politics based games but fear they will be dull as dishwater.

Any ideas please?

You could try a "colonists game" from Far Horizons, but scale it up with the players being the personal staff of an Imperial governor (maybe one PC is the governor). Lots of issues that could be had, especially post-Endor. Look at Deep Space 9, Defiance, and Babylon 5 for ideas.

In the course of their adventures they encountered many Imperial leaders, right? Mentors, superior officers, fixers, contacts, ISB, etc.... Well, you can go back and pull up some of those NPC's and have the NPC's choose up sides and decide which way they are going. That is: Join the rebellion? Old Empire? New Order? Isolated remnant? Go independent? Go criminal? Power grab? Individual Moffs go rogue? Form a new Senate? Etc....

The NPC's reach out to the PC's as "trusted associates" and beg them (or offer them riches & power) to come with. The PC's play out who to join with, who to trust, who not to trust. They even see lesser NPC's joining up sides with certain leaders. Certain Pacts form. Had a PF group called the Shadow Pact. This, as a GM, let's the group decide which way to go.
