Armada still featured in FFG Catalog...barely

By AllWingsStandyingBy, in Star Wars: Armada

So, I recently bought Star Wars: Outer Rim , FFG's newest boardgame. Like all FFG boxed games, it contains a copy of FFG's catalog, presumably their newest and most recent catalog (it includes KeyForge, for instance). Out of curiosity, I flipped all the way through it.

The good news is that Armada still has an entry in it... on page 30-31 (3rd last game entry, only ahead of Descent and AGoT the Boardgame), a full nine games behind Imperial Assault's entry (and most IA players believe it's an effectively dead game that's not getting any more new physical releases and has lost FFGOP support). Also, while X-Wing's two-page entry includes things beyond the Core Set, like expanding your squadron and has a picture of the Fang Fighter, the Armada entry focuses only entirely on the Core Set, with the four images being the Core Set spread, the VSD, the CR90, and command dials. No mention of anything expansion-related, nothing of the SSD, etc. ...

Even in print media, Armada seems like the forgotten child.

That seems an odd marketing choice but then a lot of FFGs marketing choices seem baffling to me, especially with Armada.

As I have not seen the newest catalog, I will hazard to guess from previous experience that its the same size as others. In which case, it likely just boils down to game marketing priority. Keyforge, XWING 2.0, and Legion are the big risks right now, so you have to push those heavily... ARMADA... well... they are more at risk at losing players, but they already have your money. So, it boils basic math. Bet heavy on getting more for 3 products over losing customers for 1.

In the catalogue I got with Outer Rim Armada has the same space and style as X-Wing or Legion. It's near the back but it is there.

Legion only mentions the Core Set, and I suspect X-Wing only mentions other stuff because of X-Wing 2.0; meaning they have extra publicity stuff prepared and need to highlight the conversion kits.

The logic is sound, but it's not like Armada is coming in just behind the Big Three... it's the 18th game in the catalog, at the very back, narrowly edging out only two other games, one of which has been established and around for 15 years (Descent) and the other which is a non-expanding standalone board game based on a property that is waning from the public imagination):

1) Keyforge
2) Star Wars: X-Wing
3) Star Wars: Legion
4) L5R: Beginner Game
5) Cosmic Encounters
6) Star Wars: Destiny
7) Arkham Horror: the Card Game
8} Star Wars: Imperial Assault
9) L5R: the Card Game
10) Mansions of Madness
11) Fallout
12) Twilight Imperium
13) Star Wars: Rebellion
14) Civilization: A New Dawn
15) A Game of Thrones: the Card Game
16) Eldritch Horror
17) Genesys RPG
18) Star Wars: Armada
19) Descent
20) A Game of Thrones: The Board Game

I'd have at least swapped Armada and Imperial Assault's positions, since the latter is no longer getting physical releases and has lost OP support.

That's exactly how I viewed it as well when I saw it in my copy. They put in the base of pretty much every game and nothing more save for X-Wing which had some more stuff as a 2.0 spread. Honestly I don't blame them for not remaking the advertisement insert every time they update something from it's base form, and it isn't like you can play Armada without obtaining a core set

Wait wait wait. Armada is the 18th game listed. Gozantis are SWM18. GR75s come with 18 total cards...............

Guys we're getting new flotillas in wave 8! Finally a Brahahahahahahahahatok will show up and this forum will lose its **** minnnnnnd!!

Armada's catalog entry isn't for us. It's for potential players of Armada.

If that's your target audience, then it seems FFG should give a basic blurb about what the game is about and give people some information about the "entry point" to the game (ie the Core Set).

Do you really think it is a good idea to say, "Look how awesome the SSD is! By the way, its not a complete game. You'll spend $200 to get that and then need to drop another $100 on the Core Set."?

And if we look at the 18 sideways it looks like a guy with glasses. Rey wore stormtrooper glasses in episode 7, and R is the 18th letter of the alphabet. Rey is coming! Let's see, she's got to be better than Luke because she succeeds him and succeeds where he can't (she gets Snoke killed by manipulating Kylo, while Vader conciously made the choice to save his son).

i imagine she's going to be in the Falcon, cost 18 points, roll 5 black against squadrons, and automatically have an accuracy added in. So like Bossk, but better and for cheaper. Oh and she gets 2 braces and a scatter.

Oh crap it is! Obviously it's all a hidden message about Rey. Special ability is when she spends a defense token she may toggle her activation slider, as she manipulate attacks against her into an advantage!

Wait...isn't Rey supposedly Palpatine's kid? Maybe she'll have her father's ability and you have to discard a defense token when declaring an attack against her, or any friendly squadron within 1-5.

A ship thats been delayed significantly past its initial launch date and has likely delayed entire waves of content.

Very likely this 👆 perhaps the newer content was also made with the SSD in mind so they can't be released earlier?

I wonder if they've received an order from higher up that they can't release any new Armada ships until they've got the SSD out, given the resources sunk into it. Or maybe that they couldn't start working on new expansions until it was ready for production.

I suspect the SSD will be out in Q3. When they delayed it they could have gone with Q2, being optimistic, and tried to rush it. But I suspect they were pessimistic, worked out that they would definitely have it by the end of September, so went with Q3. Probably mid-August if not sooner.

Lets me honest though... armada has never appeared more than the core box near the end of the brochure in any that I've seen
