How are the contrast paints in general?

As someone getting back into painting, after getting considerably older, I'm liking them. They have worked well for me. For cloth and organic surfaces they can work wonders, hence the scales. If you are painting a lot of miniatures, say for Zombicide, I think they will be great.
The one I used on Bossk’s scales, I also plan on using on the B1 battle droids when they come out.
The two things I recommend the most are you use the contrast medium to thin out the contrast colours. It is what I did with Bossk’s flight suit, otherwise that specific yellow comes out very orange when it pools. Also, you have to be careful about missing spots on a model. Often times, you may not notice until it dries.
I don't have it handy, just this moment, but I did Darth Vader in the Black, and it worked wonderfully. Very quick. Did some areas again to make darker, such as the helmet.
All in all, they add another tool in your painting pipeline, but they don't replace all. But for doing Bossk, I found the scales came out perfect for very little effort. I was dreading the dewback, but I think with the right colours, it will be easy-peasy.
Edit: the White will not give you a bright white, more of a grey, so the contrasts won't help much with Stormtroopers, but I have to try priming them in a bright white and diluting the apothecary white to just go into the grooves and such. Battledroids will be painted in a day.
Edited by That Blasted SamophlangeWhat exactly is Contrast Medium? Is it just matte acrylic medium? Cause thinning your paints with that has always had a very similar effect to Citadel Contrast paints.

It is meant to thin down the pigment, without changing the consistency for the contrast paints.
If you add water to the contrast paints, they don't work the same way, but the medium dilutes the colour, so I suppose the answer is yes.

Sounds like its acrylic medium yeah. If in small amounts it reduces opacity but doesn't noticeably change consistency or surface tension, that's almost definitely what it is. Good to know. Since I can buy big bottles of it for cheap!
Well, it seems to be a secret mix of acrylic medium and flow improver.

I had success with the white by using hardware store satin white rattle cans as a base, using the white as a wash, then putting the detail and a scar white highlight over them.
They aren't going to win painting awards, but they are more than table ready and look the part
