Knocking dudes Prone

By wastevens, in Rules Questions

I've got a player who's a Hida Defender, and looking at taking Rushing Avalanche Style, because duh.

But she's raised a question, regarding the second Opportunity spend; it increases the damage on targets that are Prone, but the only obvious ways to knock people Prone are via Techniques.

Is there a general 'You can spend X Opportunities in Y stance to attempt to knock someone Prone' that I'm just overlooking?

You usually need a technique to knock prone. But your GM might allow some check to do it, though that is dependant on how your GM feels because there is no "set rule".

L5R depth, tactically, is a lot included in the techniques. On that front, it feels a bit influenced by d&d 4th ed.

But the game is flexible enough to allow you to knock prone someone with a check. As long as the GM is good enough to make it a fun, balanced, gimmick. And not some spammable thing that is better than a technique that knocks prone.

This. Especially the last bit....

I had a pretty similar situation come up in my game, actually. A player wanted to essentially Bull Rush someone off a boat. I'm new enough to the system that I'm not real comfortable coming up with rules for stuff like this on the fly yet. How would you personally have ruled it? Keep opportunity equal to their Earth ring or something? Up the TN but allow for a Resist roll? If someone was willing to list a few examples of how they'd rule stuff like this (knocking someone prone or inflicting other minor conditions, bull rushing, maybe disarming), I'd be grateful.

Straight up an unarmed competitive check (as a full action) is the easiest. But not my prefered as it favors Air and Fire stance too much. For this reason, I would only use this method out of conflicts (narrative scenes) in which stances don't have effects.

In conflicts, my prefered way of doing it would be same as "Snaring". So you use unarmed (punch) or a snaring weapon and the same rule (opportunity needed = to vigilance of target) but replace immobilized by prone.
Simple, no added rules! And since prone is basically less "bad" than immobilized, it is balanced.
Also, if the opponent is in earth stance he is immune to it.
