beginner looking for help to analyze / play a deck

By Squalou, in KeyForge

Hi,

I'm new to Keyforge, and among other decks there's one I don't understand at all how to play.

There are not that many creatures in it (or maybe I really didn't get luck playing it, 10 times in a row :) ) , more artifacts than usual, I can see some combinations but ... not very powerful.

I'm not a good player, so I won't blame the deck. I'm probably missing something.
If someone could have a look, would really be great.

There are good Mars creatures I think, I would tend to try to discard these creatures (to gain I with Feeding Pit), then use Arise to get them back and play them. But this is slow and fragile.

There's a good combo with Dis dominator Bauble -> play Mars Ulyq or John Smith -> play or replay a creature. *but* I never managed to have those in play.

I can slow down the opponent a bit, but ... not enough, and I never reap enough.

thank you !

Two words, Crystal Hive! Keep those mars creatures and get Hive out.

Ok !

any fancy idea to 'wait' until I finally draw these creatures ? I've really often been stuck with nothing playable. (like : improvements on creatures but no creatures to improve)
Is it wise to discard in this specific situation ?

Yes, if you cannot use a card, discard it. Later on as you get more experience you'll probably start being able to read when you should hold something and when you shouldn't, but until then, I recommend getting in the habit of always getting as much out of your hand each turn as possible. If you can't or don't want to play something, then ditch it. A useless card in your hand is keeping you from reaching the more useful card in your deck. ;)

I think you have a slight misreading: Feeding Pit accepts ANY creature. On a mars turn - play all the mars guys you have, then use the pit to get rid of a creature of a different house - you get to draw more. If you have arise in your hand, you can get rid of a Dis creature, then get it back the next turn (along with friends) meaning you've essentially spent 1 chain for 1 aember and an extra card.

Grabber Jammer, Megamouth and Bolter are always just plain amazing combos with "John Smyth" as he allows you to use them a 2nd time (and the crystal hive on top of it is gravy). You can capture twice, hit (and probably purge) a creature for 4 damage, or use something out of house. John + Mega + Sequis is the same as Jammer but you'll get an extra 2 aember. HOWEVER megamouth doesn't have the text "ready" on it, so you can use sequis once, then have megamouth use someone else (Pit Demon is always nice).

Inspiration is fun with Maxena but you have a ton of options. For one example: Inspiration -> Megamouth -> Tocsin.

All 3 houses have cards that let you use something out of house so it looks like your deck is going for maximum flexibility where you can use utility creatures no matter what you choose each turn. i.e. Dominator -> Megamouth -> Sequis. Heck you've got sigil of brotherhood just to really make it fun.

Also don't misunderstand: Dominator Bauble allows a USE each turn, not a play. The creature needs to already be on the field.

Anyway, I'd say the deck looks like a great beginner deck as it's not so much that it has great cards in it, as it has no bad cards. It should be really solid to play. (shield of justice is one of the few I find worthless 99% of the time)

EDIT: Although... shield of justice on a turn, then using your 2 inspirations to have Overlord Greking go steal 2 opposing creatures for you without getting damaged in return could be fun...

Thank you soooo much !!

Indeed I had some misunderstandings. You confirm what I thought : no 'bad' thing in this deck. I managed a few good games (with loss though), but always got stuck at a point. Discarding more will probably help.

Now I'll have to try again, and again, and again, to see how things goes.

(trying alone, I managed to reap 12 in one turn, but ... that was alone and late in game. So, there's potential. Anyway even when loosing games it's always fun to play)

And to close this topic : I finally managed a good game and a tight victory. So thank you again.

Thing is : it's hard to survive long enough (I was 0 key to 2), but when finally I got Crystal Hive installed, opponent destroyed all creatures ... I had Arise, so all my mars creatures came into play.... the remaning 3 turns were amazingly efficient.
So, it can happen :)

There ya go. ;)

That's what I love about the game is that you often have to play on the fly. Even decks I feel like I really know well I've had eureka moments in the middle of games where I suddenly see a possible combo appear I've never thought about before. Never stop experimenting. 😁
