Character Creation with all the books

By MrTInce, in Game Masters

Morning,

I am about to start a new campaign with a fresh new session zero for my players. When I first did this I had the 3 core books. I now have all the released books ( and carrying them around is now easy feat). I plan to run an edge campaign but wants players to see a full wealth of options to help them. How have people found character creation with a group with all books available?

Works fine with an experienced group, but can lead to a lot of indecision in newbies. As a GM, decide which of Duty, Morality, and/or Obligation you're going to use. I also suggest using the Force and Destiny starting rules for everyone (+10 XP or +2,500 credits or +5 XP & +1,000 credits without worrying about taking on extra Obligation or burning off Duty ).

If the players are at least somewhat familiar with RPGs then option overload shouldn't be much of an issue, and if you're already familiar with the careers then you can help out the rest by pointing them to likely options for whatever it is they want to play.

It may be worth sounding them out ahead of time as to whether they'd prefer the AoR or EotE style of campaign to start; no point in going for one if they're more comfortable with the other.

Good suggestions. It will be EDGE and using obligation.

OggDude's builder is good for this. I usually have a laptop that everyone can crowd behind.

Another thing I do is print off the talent trees so people can rifle through them

Yeah, I was considering printing but also want to save trees.

Using OggDude’s, I’ve printed out all of the specialization trees and keep them in a binder for quick and easy reference.

That's a good idea. May have to kill a few trees and do that myself

Assuming your players have a reasonable degree of familiarity with the system, it tends to work pretty well. Newer or generally inexperienced players might get hit with some serious analysis paralysis just simply from being overwhelmed with having too many options.

Having PDFs (either from the thread link that kaosae provided or creating them yourself from OggDude's program) certainly helps, especially if you have a tablet or a laptop to store them on; I have copies of RLogue177's talent trees on my tablet, and it's been of a great help.

Garran's suggestion of having at least a basic discussion ahead of time with the players to settle on what sort of campaign you'd want to run and they want to play in is a very good idea.

Also, just because you (and by extension the players) have access to all the books doesn't mean you have to use all of them in the same campaign. Since you seem to be leaning towards EotE, perhaps ask that your players stick to EotE careers and specs unless they've got their hearts set on something that's truly and completely outside of what EotE offers in those regards, making exceptions on a case-by-case basis; for instance, someone wanting a refugee Padawan that survived Order 66 should be allowed to take Padawan Survivor, but I'd suggest drawing the line at letting them use the Jedi career, and probably also just sticking to how EotE handles using dark side pips rather than also lugging in Morality, especially if that player is the only Force user in the party.

Decide how you're handling Lightsabers.

If it's a EotE game with a bold E otE and not much Jediness then you'll probably want to have sabers be the damage 10 murder bats they are, but also have the Saber Skill and trees unselectable.

If it's more eotE, and FaD character options are expected up front, go with the FaD numbers.

Finally, if it's a tightly run campaign, you may be able to mix and match, mirroring the original Trilogy and removing the Damage 10 saber once the story hits the right point.

I recently ran my Session 0 for my new Campaign with players that have never run a campaign before.

We also used all Source Books and I made all Careers and Specializations available to them, putting them into an new document including everything.

But up front I talked with them about the style of the campaign and what the setting would be, in our case: A Edge based, shady, outlaw themed campaign, with all of them starting in Prison and meeting there.

In the end 3 out of 4 players took Edge Careers and one chose a Seeker Executioner aka Force Sensitive Assassin.

I'm supremely happy with the result and even if they had taken other Careers, as long as the chosen characters fit the setting you want to play in, let them choose what they want to play.

Well the players are already in discussion with what they wish and it looks like all edge careers.

The set up will be that they are individually hired to take over the running of a failing colony on an uncharted world. They will act as the mechanics, doctors and the law for the farmers that live there. Their employer will be tasking them to make it a success with lots of challenges along the way.

It's fine for my group if I limit the F&D careers to the ones that don't have lightsaber skills.

Let them play what they want as long as it fits your game. If you do not want the force in your game take that book away, but the others are really easy to mix. When I play any system I always offer obligation to my characters for extra EXP or cash, since it helps with their back story or give you thing to add to your game. Everyone has a history.

Yeah, not sure that a force-user fits in there at all. Probably best that way.

We've found that the splat books to be somewhat underwhelming because a boring character is a boring character no matter what Career or Spec you pick. Our group is more focused on character and background. Settle on a career later. Pick a career AFTER you have a character, not pick a career and create a character.

For my local group's post RotJ campaign, we have pc's from every core book. We have a thief, a gambler, an ex imperial trooper, a gadgeteer, an ex rebel engineer, a steel hand adept, and a fringer/scavenger. We had two more players, but one had their schedule change, the other unexpectedly moved out of town.

Every one is using obligation except for the force user, who is using morality.

I run a campaign that uses 2 of the core rules EotE and FaD. There's a group of smugglers and a group of Force Sensitives that are working with them while trying to stay hidden.

I find mixing FaD into the other books is easier because Force Sensitives get all the drama and no real objectives. It will eventually evolve into all three books once they start working for the rebellion and our smuggler team resolves their ties to the "Boss" Cabana the Hutt. I just track morality and obligation where necessary. It gets interesting when the need for the smugglers to whack someone conflicts with the moralities of the Force Sensitives. Eventually I will add Duty to the mix.
