Stamina on tournaments

By Muppetfluffer, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Ive been on 10 tournaments since 2.0 release and my win/loss curve is pretty obvious.

Games

1-2 won 18 lost 2

3 (after lunch) won 2 lost 8

4-6 i start to mess up with my gameplans, mixing up dials getting worse and worse with time( loss ratio roughly 80%)

Loosing topcuts due to mixing up dials or forgetting that you are stressed when dialing in your talon roll is like highfiving your self in the face with a chair!

So my question is, how do you practice your stamina? What strategies do u have to manage 6games in a day or 10ish in a weekend?

One thing people over look, especially at Conventions is sleep. Go into the event like an athlete would a sporting event. Plenty of rest the night before. Don't stay up theory crafting or practicing. And if it's a two day event, limit the celebration for making day 2 cut.

Eat healthy and hydrate. Take some snacks and water. You will be surprised at how much better you will perform.

i like to practice setup positions and formation flying of my squad. i find it useful to have 2-3 standard setups and then play thru my first 3-4 turns of movement with asteroids placed on my half of the play area.

Practice with the squad around 20 games, get sleep bring water and several snacks. Sit down when you can.

Don't forget too that if you're winning earlier, it means your games should get more difficult. You're playing opponents more similar to your playing level so a lot of those are potential 50/50 match-ups and those mistakes you mentioned carry way more weight on an outcome than they do against easier opponents.

Also, yes to snacks and water over energy drinks (maybe one energy drink/soda towards the end). I always bring a bag of Pretzels to munch on through the day and a cliff bar or two in case I start feel weak.

Thank you for all the above replies.

My summary should be.

1) Share the long drives

2) Make some routine strategys to fall back on when tired or preserving energy.

3) Eat small meals to constantly uphold bloodsugar.

4) Drink water!

5) Sit down more!

Meal prep is a biggie, as a tourney is not just a 2 hour game or even a 3 round tourney that ends at lunch time.

Look up chess tourney preps, as its a cognitive game that has much much more written about it.

Here is a pdf of chess tourney meal prep

Meal Ideas (from above pdf)

Here’s some suggestion for both meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans. Pick and choose what fits your lifestyle. Whole wheat bread should be stone ground.

Breakfast

Fresh Peanut Butter

Whole Wheat Bread

Banana

Oatmeal

Low fat Vanilla Yogurt

Scrambled Eggs Whole Wheat Toast

Lunch

Tuna or Turkey Whole Wheat bread Cantaloupe

Spaghetti Marinara Sauce Spinach Salad with egg

Tofu and Brown Rice Three Bean Salad

Dinner

Chili with Kidney Beans Brown Rice

Garden salad (Choose salad dressings made with canola oil.)

Brown rice and Lentils Fresh Salmon

Snacks

Cheese sticks

Banana

Low-Fat Yogurt

Orange

Dried Apricots

Broccoli sprigs

Hard cooked egg wedges

Hummus & pita bread

Walnuts

I will also add my recent personal experience. Went to Seattle System Open. Spent a lot of money to travel there and hotels, etc. so I didnt want to **** around. For breakfast on System Open, and Hyper Quals the next day, I ate yogurt, banana, hard boiled egg, and cheerios (hotel did not have oatmeal option or I would have gone that route), and two cups of coffee. During tournament I ate almonds and granola bar, drank lots of water. For lunch, mediterranean chicken tacos with hummus.

Felt good in both tourneys and got better as the day went on (or were my opponents getting drained?). Won 9, loss 2 games throughout both days.

Another good thing to do is between rounds, or at lunch, etc. Any break, is dont talk or think about Xwing. Grab your phone and just read a news article, or pull out a book and just read. Get your mind off Xwing to delay the mind strain. Its like working in front of a computer all day. Every 45 minutes or so, stand up, do something else instead of staring at the screen to prevent fatigue.

This is gonna sound crazy, but if you can't find time to prep any food, one candy/snack that can keep you going is Peanut M&Ms . The the chocolate has both sugar and a bit of (naturally occurring) caffeine to give you immediate energy, while nuts are a good source of protein (slow-release energy). The candy shells keep them from melting until you're ready to eat. It is by no means a balanced meal or healthy in the long term, but in a pinch, they can get you through the grind of a long-haul tourney.

Oh, and stay hydrated at all costs!

That’s crazy talk... breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so you’ve got to get it right!

It should be a Full English (with fried bread, none of this toast malarkey!), accompanied by a mug of Builders Tea.

With a start to the day like that, you don’t need to worry about other ‘meals’ and can just snack your way to victory! ;)

That's the hardest part (at least for me) when adrenaline kicks in. So I would add:

6) Good shoes.

For me it's light hiking shoes or running shoes. Comfort over style.

So that is a "No" to Wookie Boots?

I usually make the mistake of winning early and setting up much harder rounds!

6 rounds is really too many for me, but I have been flying quite acey squads as well.

Know yourself too. At UK System Open I really couldn’t face day 2, but I signed up with everyone else. Ended up hating it and dropping out after 2 rounds. I’ve been much more light on x-wing since then, even took a month off.
