Suggested idea: X-Wing slang glosary

By LUZ_TAK, in X-Wing

Hi. I have a suggestion for the community: why not set a x-wing slang thread that can act as a glosary for the rookies like me?

The threads are teeming with terms that are in no way "oficial". Some I get from context, like VTG = veteran turrer gunner, but others not.

Examples: what does "brobot", "TLT", and "double tap" mean?

Just an idea.

this exists but it's old. I guess if you want to brush up on your 1.0 slang...

would anyone else be interested in making one of these? I'd be cool making and filling in a google doc but I wouldn't have time to maintain so I'd like some collaborators

@Kieransi I'd be happy to assist with that.

@LUZ_TAK In case you are actually asking after those three examples:

BroBot = IG-88; BroBots is a list running multiple.

TLT = Twin Laser Turret, an infamous 1st Edition upgrade.

Double Tap = to shoot twice.

I was! Txs a lot.

I'm pretty new to the game and get a bit lost reading some of these posts myself. . .especially when it comes to people using pilots instead of ships.

" Saw, Heff, and 2 blues, all with TacOffs, Leia on a Blue, and Intimidation on Heff"

This is gibberish to new players. For a game based on precision, the discussion of it is pretty loose. A slang guide would be helpful.

Say what you will about the official app, but the card database search function is a great resource for figuring out what cards do - I've been playing the game for years and still use it to look up unfamiliar cards played on streams.

For slang about squad archetypes, MetaWing can help sometimes (a lot of the nicknames used there may not be widely used though). This is also a good resource for new players trying to get a sense of what is (currently perceived to be) good.

When folks refer to certain pilots, it's assumed that you're aware which ship they're tied to which can be frustrating, I agree. They all have unique abilities and some are better known than others. I've been playing for about 3 years now and I can say with certainty that I couldn't name 40%+ of their abilities, but I'd say I'm familiar with the names and ships they belong to of about 80%.

There's no way around it, but it just takes time. Exposure to the slang, the names, the alternate names/nicknames (Bellyrub anyone?) is the best answer, but it does happen over time.

A glossary should help though!

What?! VTG doesn't mean Veteran Tail Gunner? It was turret gunners on Y-Wings all along...

Veteran Tail Gunner is almost never used (except by @Arc170Chris ). Turret is the gunner of choice, so "VTG" naturally defaults to it.

Hey, I use VTG (tail) a lot!!

Noted!

Veteran Tail Gunner at 1-2 points would be a great buy on a Marauder or ARC. At 4 points it's a total waste.

I run it on my Wolffe, and literally nowhere else.

It’s also frustrating when people say “Blues” without any context. T-70? B-Wing? U-Wing? V19? Ok, maybe not that last one, everyone uses Gold Squadron Troopers for Torrents....

Still, I agree that abbreviations for pilot names are so extensive that they really just need to be learned by exposure (or asking), since a full list would be so long as to be useless. Some of the more bizarre ones should make the glossary (bellyrub/bulbasaur is a good example), but I’m not sure there are many that go by some weird name rather than ship or pilot name. The only ones I recall off the top of my head are Space Cow (Lambda) and U-Boat (Jumpmaster). Oh, and the Gunboat. Who the heck actually calls that thing an Alpha Whatever Starwing?
