Contrast paints are pretty cool but they're an old technique. Thinned down paint, not as thin as a wash, over a light undercoat, was always a quick way to paint and shade a mini in one step. It's convenient that they give you the exactly right proportions in one bottle but it's hardly the revolution that people are making it out to be.

My thoughts as well

Thanks for this. I’m a relative newcomer to the painted/painting minis world (beginning of Legion, started some terrain leading up to product release) so this was news to me. I’m innately cynical of marketing hype, but that doesn’t mean I knew what was going on with these new paints.

For someone in that situation, is it worth trying for certain applications like certain Wookie warriors? Thinking of the fur colors so I can get the shade right, and then traditionally paint the weapons and web gear.

Yep, been doing it for years and that’s exactly how I painted my Stormtroopers: White primer, thinned down grey paint then white highlights.

I haven’t seen the results in person of the contrast paints and how it really compare, but that is my first impression as well. It’s convenient and will definitely help new painters (and me by the side by making their army more beautiful to look at), but I don’t think it’s the magical paint that some people makes it sound to be.

They are just like the stains or washes that they sell, just a bit thicker. I love the washes as that's usually how I pain these days (prime, base-coat and wash with some highlights) just due to speed and nice results. But nothing really different than that, maybe less coats if you're really trying to get a dark stain.

Great episode! Love the talk about organized play. The problem with the kits I think is that they cost the store owner money. That and FFG has too many games! FFG should make them free. I think Wizards gives free stuff to stores for Magic shenanigans.
