Very sad Origins this year.

By ForceSensitive, in X-Wing

I don't think a single pod fired for the first three days. There was only ever two guys I even saw waiting to see if it would fill. I'm not in attendance for the today or tomorrow though. (Saturday and Sunday) Not really a point since my main attractions aren't there. Prize walls for destiny and key forge, but just two cards of low value up for grabs anyway. And the good one, acrylic Lando, is only for winning all three games. Kinda hard to snag if the event doesn't even go off. Was really hoping to just camp out there for five days and grind tickets for flushing out my acrylic set. The Columbus region has a fair number of guys that travel quite a bit for events. And they were talking about the reason they wouldn't go was that there was no draw. Aren't, word on the street, is that since attendance was low last year, but only because of the timing of the announcement of second ed, they didn't schedule much for is this year. Bummer day and missed opportunity. Oh well I guess. Maybe I can make it to Gencon?

Origins' fault for no System Open and for stating they had no prize wall. At that point, why buy a conference ticket when you have local tournaments, friends, and stores?

I've also noticed several other smaller cons trying unsuccessfully to host X-wing the last year or so...

Not origins fault. Not even Cascade's fault, who wanted to run an SOS at Origins again.

It will take a long time to rebuild the goodwill that the game lost (assuming it ever gets rebuilt at all).

The last time I was at Origins was 2015 or so. X-Wing was dead. I played a demo table with two other people on it for 45 minutes or so.

I don't think Origins is a barometer for the health of anything other than Origins.

How is Origins doing these days, on a general level? I haven't been in a very long time.

it seems like it's gaining in popularity since I was there 4 years ago, but it's still sad compared to the major game conventions like GenCon, DragonCon, PAX, etc.

I used to work for a company that did PR and advertising for game publishers and we'd hit the convention circuit every summer. Origins was a nice break, because it had like a quarter of the attendance of any of the other shows we would go to.

No system open, no x-wing? I mean, pretty much?

I would've gone to an origins system open. No particular motivation to go to origins and pay for a hotel and entry into origins to play x-wing casually for a few hours.
