Silence the Kami / Dispel Magic

By T_Kageyasu, in Rules Questions

Forgive my limited familiarity with shugenja in 5th edition, but is there an invocation or ceremony that can serve to dispel magic? In previous editions there was something similar to the title of this post. I can see maybe casting the same spell to take over command of the kami, but haven't seen anything like that in what I've read so far. Thanks for your input!

There are a couple techniques which can apply the Silenced condition (which makes maho and invocations much harder), but I can't recall anything which specifically works as a kind of counterspell or to remove an ongoing magic effect.

EDIT: did a quick ctrl+f and dispel is not used as a keyword for anything. Maybe saving that for future stuff, like a shugenja only ritual or something. One of the maho techniques in Shadowlands allows for an out-of-turn incidental so there are interesting mechanisms which could crop up.

Extinguish works against persistent Fire effects, but I don't know of a generic/general-purpose "dispel".

Intentional or not, perhaps the lack of mechanics at the moment means we can look forward to additional input in future rules supplements. Extinguish might be a template for consideration, however it's primarily for non magical sources of fire. I'm not even sure where to begin on crafting an elemental backlash for a dispel.

If you're dispelling an invocation, then the Kami get pissed at you - how dare you try to undo a kami's will? No invocations for you until the end of your next turn.

If you're dispelling maho, you REAAALLLLY screw up, and instead of smothering it, you create a splash, like throwing a stone into a lake. Everyone in the scene gets exposed to Taint. Hope you brought that jade.
