As I was running my game this weekend a small matter came up when my Monk received the "burning" condition. Burning states that it's damage is physical damage that bypasses resistance. The monk has a (earth) Kiho that says physical damage is reduced.. so the obvious question here is. "was this a typo and reduction was meant to be resistance, or is resistance simply one possible way of reducing damage?" Or in other words, "does my Monk get burned by fire, or can he sit in it all day?"

Is the kiho from a supplemental book? I don't see any Earth kiho in the base book that reduce physical damage as an enhancement effect. Earthen Fist gives you +1 physical resistance and Grasp the Earth Dragon reduces the severity of crits from physical sources (though it has a burst effect that reduces physical damage to 1 for one round).

That raises a question in my mind though-- does that reduction to 1 happen before or after resistance is applied? The book doesn't seem to address the order in which to apply damage reduction effects.

I would interpret this as fire damage bypassing physical resistance and the kiho reducing damage without specifying the source. No typos. It does leave open the issue of how to handle resistance against multiple sources of damage, say from a powerful nemuranai that deals both physical and spiritual damage.

In the case of the kiho Grasp of the Earth dragon, it happens after the resistances and reductions, since the kiho mentions "damage you Suffer" (Suffer means it happens after the reductions, at least that is how I read it, between the lines of course).
So you must take the 1 point of endurance to not take any critical strike since you suffered 1 damage.

Yeah, if nothing else, I strongly suspect that aligns with rules as intended, anyway.

You suffer 1 physical damage from fire, yep. All sources get cut down to 1, since reduction doesn't add to your Physical Resistance.
