2019 Store Championships

By Force Majeure, in X-Wing

I had a lot of fun at last Summer's Store Champs despite being rather anemic.

Initially they weren't going to happen then FFG righted the ship (I can't find the post that breaks down the new competitive structure and naming convention).

Am I remembering correctly? We ARE getting them this summer right?

There was talk they’d be coming back, then talk that they weren’t, and then just vague rumors, FB posts, and silence.

Your guess is as good as ours!

I was under the impression that Wave Championships replace Store Champs given their relative level of attendance and competition.

Yeah, I don't know. Where is that dang announcement that said what the name changes were, etc.? I could have sworn it spoke of Store Championships returning.

Ninja'd! Thank you @skotothalamos

Championship Events

In 2018, we introduced several new naming conventions for our events and corresponding kits. This experiment proved unsatisfactory for many of our customers, so in 2019 we are changing our naming structure to something more intuitive and consistent across all of our games.

Store Championships

These are fun, local tournaments that your favorite local game store gets to hold twice per year (per game). Store Championships represent a chance to test and refine your competitive skills while playing for a range of custom prizes.

Prime Championships

Formerly known as "Regional Championships," Prime Championships are high-level tournaments that are run at select retailers and draw players from across a wider region to compete for custom prizes and qualification for top-level events. The winner of each Prime Championship reserves his or her seat at the game's next World Championship.

Grand Championships

Formerly known as "National Championships," Grand Championships are high-level events that take place only once per year per nation or territory. These events feature top-level prizes and qualify the Top 4 players to their game's next World Championship.

Continental Championships

Continental Championships are international events that are open for all who wish to attend. These events draw top players from multiple nations—as well as aspiring players looking to make their mark—and encourage them to compete for top-level prizes, including the World Championship invitations awarded to the Top 8 participants.

World Championships

The pinnacle of any game's competitive Organized Play program, each World Championship is a showcase of the world's greatest players and strategies. In 2019, the World Championships for X-Wing and Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game will be invitation-only. By 2020, the rest of our Organized Play World Championships will be invitation-only as well.

The Wave Championships/ Hyperspace Trials (now Prime Championships) are Regional level events, so store championships are more for the locals so-to-speak.

A Wave Championship is not a regional. I'm sorry.

Case in point: check the number of players supported and the quality of prizes supported between the events. I'm also more than fairly certain that to run a Hyperspace Trial, your store must be able to host 64 players (the old minimum for a regional). No such prerequisite exists for Wave Championships.

correct. I've run two Wave Championships already. you just had to buy the kit and run an event.

You are correct.

Too many categories of championship!

At one of our local they decided to cover all the bases and called it "Mothership Super Prime Hyper Regional Championship"

Ah **** nvm they forgot to add 'store'.

Any sign of Store Championships yet?

Since X-wing had rebranded their organized play into the 2.0 Wave Championship/Hyperspace Trials/System Opens before FFG as a whole changed organized play, I'm betting we won't see the new wording until next year, after the world championships.

Grand Championships have already started and the next wave of Trials is worded as Primed Championships. Deluxe Wave Kits have been replaced with Seasonal Premier Kits. So last thing is Store Champs to enter the fold.

edit: actually they just confirmed on Twitter that the Second Wave of Trials will be Trials because the prize support has already been printed.

has anyone seen or heard a confirmation that the 2nd season prizes will be different or not? I've heard that they will and that they won't.

They’ll be different, they’ve said it on Twitter and a few different Facebook comments

I think they also said there won't be as many Prime Championships as Hyperspace Trials. Whether there will be more than there were Regionals I don't know.

The deluxe wave 3 kits were cancelled. Hopefully store championships will be back soon, otherwise it's going to be a pretty empty season leading up to Worlds.

Anyone know if the season kits talked about here are still happening? https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2019/3/29/x-wing-seasonal-play/

The Proton Rocket and Blue Squadron Scout were being distributed at my LGS last night, so... Yes?

They were unfortunately not solicited very well, my FLGS has been going round and round with Alliance as well as FFG, we’re officially S.O.L. on three total kits now. OP has pretty much been a large disappointment locally since the launch of 2.0. It’s really been going downhill since the exclusive distribution deal through Alliance for U.S. FLGS & as well as the not so F LGS’s.
