Highlander format

By arnoldrew, in Star Wars: Legion

Has anyone considered a Highlander format tournament (or just random games)? Basically, every unit and upgrade in the game would be unique. I figure there would have to be at least 2 exceptions (Stormtroopers and Rebel Troopers) just to make list-building according to the normal force org possible. Even after a third Corps is released for each faction I think this would be necessary just to keep everyone from being forced to include the same units in every list, which is kind of the whole point of what this format would be trying to avoid. I figure it add a little spice every now and then as an alternative format. Any thoughts?

I wouldn’t make any corps unique.

Maybe don’t make anything unique, just don’t allow any two units in a roster to take identical combinations of upgrades. Including only one of each with zero upgrades.

Then it still becomes an exercise in how to take as many sniper teams and Z6s/DLTs as possible. You're just spending points on upgrades you don't plan to use so you can include all of the same stuff at a point penalty. I want it to be a "competitive" exercise that encourages people to bring a variety of stuff to the table.

Then just make all upgrade cards unique, since Z-6's are an upgrade? Or make the second unit and/or upgrade of its kind cost double, the third cost triple, etc. Aren't sniper rifles an upgrade card?

The thing about charging double, triple, etc. is, it makes sure people aren't left without enough points painted up to play. Whereas banning most of their collection can do that.

Making just upgrades unique isn't a bad idea, but making the point Costs ever-changing just makes list-building a huge pain in the *** and increases bookkeeping. It also actually gives people less stuff to play with on the table. Regarding painting, no one I know is overly concerned with the occasional unpainted stuff hitting the table, and this won't be a huge concern given that they can still use almost everything that is painted (just not all 6 DLTs, etc.).

Then just make upgrades unique. Done and donerer.

If I had to play a game where everything was unique it would make my armies (Blizzard Force) look MORE like everyone elses. Not less.

I have 6 snow troopers, 3 e-webs, 2 AT-ST’s, an astromech & medical droid, Vader and Veers. From this collection I draw my Imperial lists. It uses a lot of repetitive items but it’s far from a repetitive experience for my opponents!

Spot prizes for creative lists? If this is about trying to get people to bring more than the usual spam lists.
