What's so special about comms specialist?

By jocke01, in Star Wars: Legion

Hi

I'm working on my second rebel specialist box and I have noticed that most players on either side have used medical droids, astromechs and officers.

I rarely see coms spec though and everytime it's been a coms rely corps unit to increase command range or help in the neutral 3 pip command cards.

Anyone found any other uses for coms?

The other comm upgrades are just so expensive it makes it hard to justify.

I think a comms + jammer would be hilarious for a unit that wants to be in the thick of it, but that’s a ton of points to commit to something that will die for sure.

LRC sorta works, if you’re gaming the system with intent to force disarray. But I don’t think that would trigger often enough to make it worthwhile.

Well in my local area, that's why I Wonder how other players use them or not use them. + The titel is a poor atempt at a pun 😋

I sometimes thought about putting an HQ-Uplink on a unit for a back to back activation.

For example, you could use a unit of Fleet Troopers for area denial behind a line of sight blocker together with Han's Sorry about the mess. I never actually did it though because usually it is cheaper to just take a lot of core tokens and use Improvised Orders as a backup instead.

It might also be useful for Veterans or Shore Troopers to benfit both from the extra order token plus the free action they gain. A specialist with HQ-uplink is also just 7 points more expensive than a regular Trooper upgrade for this units.

Some command cards like "New Ways to motivate them", "My Ally is the force" or "No time for sorrows" also could make an extra Order Token worth the points. Three actions with one or two royal Guards units plus a couple of Snow Troopers in a crucial turn could have a nasty effect.

Haven't ever tried it though. I assume few people have. They might be better than they look in a vacuum.

I usually just run out of points to include one. I do have plans to use the Comms Spec. + Uplink with the Rebel Vets, though. It’s a great combo for activation control and probably the most logical use for them at the moment.

For certain Operations, I’ve put the Comms Spec. on regular Rebel Troopers to give them Recon Intel and push towards objectives early. Basically, gave as many units Scout as possible.

I don’t think they are a bad choice for a list at all, but you are almost certainly going to use a Droid or Officer ability whereas you may never get to use the ability of the Comms Specialist to great impact (i.e. situational).

Recon Intel is a piece of Gear, not Comms, so adding a Comms Spec doesn't give any unique interaction with Recon Intel. They can just equip RI naturally.

My bad! I think I was trying out Comms Relay making sure to give my Saboteurs orders. I don’t think I ended up relaying anything, though. The Recon Intel was to get close enough to do it.

I'm going to try them on the vets (when they come out) with hq uplinks to guarantee they get orders when needed.

They are a good unit for this because when vets are issued orders they get a dodge token. Plus, when equipping a commander with strict orders you can also remove suppression too, so you get good usage from the upgrade.
