Armada: New Commander!

By KCDodger, in Star Wars: Armada

Hey there.

So I haven't played the game yet properly. Was going to last night but uh, spent the entire time learning about the rules... Which I imagine will be something I do the whole time I play this game.

I will be playing Rebel, because I wanted The Profundity- which as I've heard, is a REALLY, REALLY good ship..! This pleases the Lackwit. Bigtime. It's easily my favorite Rebel design.

So, hit me. What do I need to go buy? I just picked up a couple of uber-cheap Nebulon-Bs, really want Hammerheads, but I don't actually know what to buy. From what I can tell, at least a second MC-75 is NOT a bad investment.

MC75s with their commander Admiral Raddus play very well with MC30s and CR90s (or Hammerheads). So to make the MC75 work I suggest getting one MC30 and one or two CR90 (or Hammerheads). Also maybe a GR-75 and/or some Squads.

Of course to play the game you will also need the Core Set. It comes with all the accessories you need to play.

EDIT: The ship can also nicely be played with Admiral Ackbar. Here I would suggest getting the MC80 Home One (which is where you will get Ackbar) and maybe a Assault Frigate Mark 2.

Well yeah, core set's an autobuy. Might need a second.

So tell me. CR-90 VS. Hammerhead. What does one do that the other doesn't? Hammerhead looks more like a glass cannon on the outset.

EDIT: I bought a GR-75 kit and Hammerheads. I cannot stop myself. My Rebel fleet grows.

Well the CR90 can go faster than the Hammerhead and is way more maneuverable. In fakt the CR90 is probably the most nimble ship in the game. That makes it much easier to stay out of medium range of enemy ships and shoot at them from long range. This, together with the Turbolaser Reroute Circuits(TRC) upgrade makes the CR90 a very powerful ship that is often difficult to destroy. While the hammerhead Scout variant may lock very similar at first glance the lack of red dice on the sides and having only one Evade token makes them a far less ideal TRC platform and staying out of enemy threat zones is much harder due to their limited maneuverable. But the hammerhead expansion is a little more flexible because it also comes with the Torpedo corvette variant wich is a great (for its very cheap price) ordnance platform.

I wouldn't recommend getting a second core set. If you really want the extra ships then buy them in the separate expansion packs because they come with different upgrades. The second core set would give you a bunch of redundant upgrades, objectives and damage deck you wouldn't use.

Unless you can get one for cheap or are getting a friend into the game, then it is not that bad of an Idea. But generally, it's a good idea to go for diversity of upgrades, rather than duplicates at first.

Lackwit!! Welcome to the dark side...

Armada.

Where every single activation is equivalent to a round in Xwing. Where the board state changes before you even get a chance to fire...

____

Rebs want some very niche and less than obvious choices to stay in the fight.

Taryn Farr on a Gozanti to support fighter Squadrons.

A few VCXs and a HWK290.

Some like to spam YTs.

A couple named Neb-B frigates.

Probably some beef like an Assault Frigate MK2 if you want to survive before you drop your Profundity Raddus bomb on the board.

A-Wings. (check out Jonathan R. And his World's win with Rebels... 2015. )

That's just off the top of my head, based on your newfound love for the MC-75.

Some really good advice, just clarifying a few things that might be confusing to new players.

Also by named frigates, I'm assuming you mean Nebulon-B titles like Yavaris and Salvation ? Or possibly Gallant Haven on the Assault Frigate MK2?

Either way some nice points, I'd also recommend checking out Biggs' blog and his articles on each ship and how they like to be flown, really helped me out as I was getting into the game: http://www.steelstrategy.com/p/commanders-guide-links.html

Especially under Raddus. Build 2 Ordnance Cuisers for survival (Aspiration, Lando, Walex, ECMs), add ACMs and External Racks, drive one in front of a juicy target, drop the other one in to trap, kill whatever you've caught. It's not invincible, especially against decentralized fleets like MSU, but I stopped flying it in our ISD-heavy meta out of boredom because it's so good at killing them.

Isn't every meta ISD-heavy? There really are not very many competitive Imp lists without ISDs.

Somewhere there's probably a meta without Imps... :D

Well, when we look at the UK Grand Championships just held... The King of Swiss was ISD-less Imperials... So there's certainly something to be said there, being that it ran ahead of all of those 2-Shippers...

Given that success, I'm sure it'll proliferate some.

Don’t forget worlds. An ISD or Demolisher has yet to take first, but a Raider? Centicore? Different story.

And the UK is always ISD heavy.

I mean, thematically, shouldn't most Empire lists have at least 1 ISD?

To be fair, there are 4 different configurations and tons of options for loadouts, so it's not like it's the most boring ship in the game.

I was not complaining. The ISD is my favorite space ship across all of Sci-Fi. I wouldn't want to play a list without it.
