My Analysis on the Various Cult Encounters

By Guest, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

avec,

I don't think anyone is seriously arguing that a Cult Membership is so good that it's worth actively seeking out one ("camping out" on the cult locations): it very clearly isn't. The issue is simply whether it's worth joining it if you're given the opportunity.

Of course the benefit of joining is extremely marginal, but so are the potential drawbacks. It *is* unlikely that the immunity to gate-open-cards will benefit you at all, but any reduction is risk is good if there isn't a downside.

While I haven't looked through the Woods and Unvisited Isle encounters, I am wholly convinced that Cult Encounters are substantially better overall than Black Cave ones.

Oh sure. If you have the Stamina to spare, or a trophy that you know you won't be able to use, then go ahead and join the cult. Just don't expect it to make any difference.

It's my impression that some people (such as Kroen) *have* argued that cult memberships are worth actively seeking out, which is why I phrased my response the way that I did.

Don't you ever put words in my mouth. All I ever said is that given the opprutunity it'll be wise to join the cult. I never, ever, EVER suggested that it's worth camping for. Don't you ever put words in my mouth ever again unless you have a quote to prove I actually said it. Which I didn't, that would be insane.

I hate you.

If I mischaracterized you, then I apologize. But I did not put words in your mouth. I just said what my impressions were. You've been talking about how the cult encounters are "AMAZING." This led me to believe that you consider them to be worth seeking out. After all, if they're not worth seeking out, then how amazing can they be?

A wise man once said, "please stop hating on me." I wonder what he meant?

Whoops.

All I ever said is that given the opprutunity it'll be wise to join the cult. I never, ever, EVER suggested that it's worth camping for.

Yeah, that's true. But your enthusiasm for taking the Cult Encounters was so intense that we figured you would actually want to get a membership. Simple mistake.

It's all right man, just a misunderstanding.

I hate you.

They're amazing if you're given the chance to join the cult. I never implied seeking for them. I'm afraid your impressions are horribly, horribly wrong. Even if I only had AH+BGotW (meaning 14 cards per location) and I played with Darrel, I wouldn't camp for a membreship. Time is the most valuable resource in the game, even more than clue tokens.

p.s. I still hate you.

@Tibs: Wanting=/=Seeking. Ofcours I want to but, AGAIN, it doesn't mean I would camp for it.
@Tibs: Why don't you reply in the Masks thread? You're needed there for quite some time now.

Let's not forget that in the time leading up to the Black Goat's release, the theme of the expansion appeared to be that the investigators should infiltrate the Cult of the Thousand (for one reason or another). In that light, it should be important to consider that people might happily accept an offered membership, but don't actually want to seek memberships out. If more knowledgeable players would rather avoid camping/seeking out memberships, then there's a fundamental problem.
