"You're too far out, we can't cover you!" The worth of tactical anti-squadron attacks

For our local narrative campaign, using renforcement rules similar to Middle Earth Battle Companies, one of the Rebel ship captains got his hands on some BWINGs and bought the expanded hanger bay upgrade for his Hammerhead (For this campaign, fleets can only have as many squadrons as your command value)... he flew his XWINGs way out there when the VICs had the, get to do a free anti-squad attack at the end of shooting.

The rebels learned the power of anti-squadron fire that day.

Oho that's for sure! Reminds me of way back around Wave IV when I ran a heavy bomber list. Flight commander had just come out and I was running that old strategy of doubling it up with FCT on Neb-B Escorts. Like a couple of sheep dogs I had them flying on either side of my bomber ball and when an opponents 10-or-so tie squads (might have also included interceptors) came roaring in, those two medium-range anti-squad dice cleaned house. Some bombers did have to do their own fighting, but not many. ;)

That's what originally got me into this strategy in the first place actually.

PDR might actually be an underrated upgrade for dual medium flak. I've seen the how capable Cymoons and LMC80Bs flak(with GT) are against squadrons. PDR gives blues the same probabilities as blacks at close range so AF-As and and ISDIIs can actually benefit well from them while still having option to medium range flak.

... I need to sleep...

Changing my statement... Its Okay, but slot priorities take over... Now, if they were a Flat Reroll, they'd potentially see time - because basically, right now, only working on Crits and not letting you do anyhting with basic ACC results? Not so great, especially not for the Slot.

If they're providing nothing for Black Die Flak, they're pretty pointless... Since that seems to be a majority these days... Black or Mixed...

Eh, gonna have to disagree there. Both AFMK2As and ISDIIs just have WAY too many better things to put in that slot. Not to mention, for an upgrade that only works at close range, it's pretty spendy at 5pts. Don't get me wrong, I know how often being able to reroll that pesky critical-miss against squads would help... but if you're gonna use an AFMK2A, you might as well use D-Caps and save 2 points. ISDIIs, I can't think of a time when you'd want to spend one of those attacks on anything but two ships.

I made a super Flak MC-75 once and my buddy happened to bring something pretty close to a Thrawn 2 ship. Flanked the MC with Y-wings and VCXs for targets...erm, support.

MC75 Armored Cruiser (104)
• General Draven (3)
• Ruthless Strategists (4)
• Electronic Countermeasures (7)
• Ordnance Pods (3)
• Leading Shots (4)
• H9 Turbolasers (8)
= 133 Points

It did a tremendous job clearing the skies, the 1.5 turns the std Imp swarm showed up and lasted. It then went on to do next to nothing to the ISD and due to poor planning with the rest of the fleet, exploded in a ball of fire.

But that one round where the scatter aces melted was just a pure delight.

I haven’t succeeded in building a balanced fleet around it though. I dream of the possibilities though.

I did something similar but with RLB and YT-1300s. Wrecked my friends Sloane-backed Ace-squads to pieces, but at the end of the day I lose enough ship-to-ship effectiveness it was never enough to win, only prevent a blow-out. Fighting Sloane with my own Aces or at least delaying them enough to kill the carrier/big bad has worked out more effectively, every time. It really sucks when Mareek and Jendon activate first and kill your brace.
