Dwarf Ranger timing question

By Toberk, in Warhammer Invasion Rules Questions

Just making sure I'm playing this right, as soon as a dwarf unit leaves play I deal the damage for Dwarf Rangers.

Ex: My opponent starts an action LIFO stack by playing a unit from his hand on his capital phase. I respond by using the Grudge Thrower action, which makes me sacrafice a unit and pay 1 resource to activate the action. Now, since I do both in order to trigger the action, a unit leaves play while adding actions to the LIFO stack. So, this activates my dwarf rangers instantly at which I assign a damage to my opponent's unit or capital. I do this, then it is his turn to add actions the the stack. Everything else resolves as normal but since the dwarf rangers is a forced effect it goes off during the triggering stage of the LIFO stack.

Let me know if this is correct.

The sacrificed unit does not leave play until the action it is sacrificed for comes off the stack. When that happens, the Dwarf Ranger forced ability also goes off.

Actually, I am pretty sure that is incorrect. Grudge Thrower reads:

Battlefield. Action: Spend 1 resource and sacrifice a unit to have each attacking or defending unit gain l until the end of the turn.

The magic "to" there is like the ":" in Magic, it indicates that the bit before there is part of the cost. So the unit is sacrificed at declaration time, not resolution time - and hence the Dwarf Ranger ability triggers immediately. Since the Dwarf Ranger effect is forced, you can't respond to it.

Example time. I have Dwarf Ranger, Mountain Legion and Grudge Thrower in play, with 1 resource up. My opponent has a Lobber Crew, which he hasn't activated since he hasn't read this post. I activate the Thrower, paying 1 and sacrificing the Legion and use the Ranger's forced ability to deal 1 to the Lobber Crew. My opponent cannot respond by sacrificing the Lobber Crew to use its ability.

I want to agree with you, but I can't find anything in the rules to hint at that. I think an official ruling is in order.
