Space Stalingrad

By Alpha17, in Terrain Building

Hello all. figured I'd share my latest table project, an urban ruins table. I'm generally looking to keep the buildings looking relatively generic, aka, WWII-style, so I can use the terrain and mat for Bolt Action if I ever actually do more than buy minis and paint them. That said, a table like this opens itself up to terrain based on Theed (Naboo), Coruscant, or Christophsis. Still very much a work in progress, with some cardboard cutouts serving as a few bombed out buildings. This one is less creative as my other tables, as I'm primarily using laser cut buildings and Legion Terrain 3D prints for terrain, but I hope to start customizing things before too long. I like this mat because it can be used in conjunction with the wrecked vehicles or even my trenches and it doesn't stand out too badly.

The few games I've played with the terrain I have now have been interesting, as they've allowed for some neat street fighting, and "Blast" has been amazing.

The biggest building frequently gets turned into a strong point. Last night I fortified it with an E-Web and a deathtrooper squad backed up by my generic commander tossing out aim tokens, dubbed it Fort Alpha, and dared anyone to try and take it.

For the future, I'm looking at more buildings, ideally ones in the size realm of the one above (so the game doesn't always have to revolve around one building), as well as more ruined or wrecked buildings to serve as rubble. I'm also open to ideas if anyone has something they think would be cool on a table like this.

Very cool! I've been wanting to see more tables based on city terrain. Some basic ideas for additions would be factories and warehouse buildings, to help add some variety beyond basic bombed-out buildings (helps to give each building a sense of purpose, and thus some story behind it). Also, just upgrading some basic bombed-out buildings to have specific purposes, like the capitol building or a bank. Gives 'em something to be fighting for.

That last point is something we've already talked about. The main building above has been dubbed the local Imperial government building, at least until something more impressive is built. Good ideas on the factories and warehouses though.

Table update, with terrain added for the terrain competition:

Hello all, I've not forgotten this table, things just got delayed a bit. I ordered a big batch of terrain from the UK early in July... and it never showed up. In fact, it was never even shipped. After a few months, I gave up and got PayPal to refund me. Ended up making another order from a different company in the UK, and while it took its sweet time getting here, it finally showed up... the day the Clone Wars core set was released. Now, several weeks later, with a lot of my CW stuff put together and painted, I can turn my attention back to this table and hopefully working to improve it.

As it stands now:

And a pair of in game pictures from last night:

As you can see, I've still got a long way to go with this table, but I'm once again making progress.

It's been a labor of love, but my urban ruins table, or "Space Stalingrad" as it has become known, is finally finished. (for the moment) After playing a couple of games on it, I'm liking how it turned out, though I still need to work on a proper layout or two for it. Oh well, that's a good problem to have.

You may note a couple of changes from previous pictures besides the painting. One of which is the inclusion of a clock tower. It's not quite as tall as I'd like it, to be, so I may be adding a small building underneath it to give it some more height.

And the other big change to existing buildings (besides the paint) is the new "stained glass windows" on the Banker's Chateau (or whatever else I end up calling it.) Added the windows to reduce the ability of units to shoot through the building. Blown out windows don't have the glass, so you can still shoot into and out of the building, but hopefully won't be able to stand on one side and shoot people on the other side quite as easily.

Still playing with and tweaking this table. It's become a favorite of my Saber tank, as the long avenues make for great opportunities to blast someone at range 4, and the Bunker Buster shells laugh at all the buildings. I snapped this picture in a game today, and loved how it looks.
