Huge ships required?

By Muramasa1021, in X-Wing Epic Play

So with Epic 2.0 coming, I have to ask: will the huge ships be required? Or can we just fill the points (however many it is) with star fighters? Because honestly, capital ships in 1.0 were ok, but didn't really hit me with the "wow" factor, so I never bought them. I just bought the cards off people who bought multiple ships and had extra Palpatine/C3PO.

So... No.

Epic has been separated from Huge ships. Epic is going to be large scale, or scenario styled play. They've got something special in mind for us there...

Huge ships are now going to be fully useable in standard 200 point games. They've announced this already. You can bring them out and use them in a pick up game easily, though they are not going to be tournament legal for any formal events. (Not going to stop me running a casual store kit with them though...)

Answer unclear at present.

Under the final official first edition Epic ruleset, at least one Huge ship was required per side.

Although home brew, field whatever you want as always I imagine.

But for the official rule set? We're going to have to be patient.

I'd like to see more official 'missions' have one in play..

But if you have no huge ships, the only thing Epic gives you is the ruleset and that "squadron movement ruler" kinda thing? Or will it bring something else?

The epic "box" will not include the huge ship conversions, apparently... so, based on what little we know, I'd lean towards the "something else." They've said scenarios would find a home in epic play.

Edit: For the record, we're venturing into speculation territory, including my own post here. Any post as to what is included may contain errors and omissions...

I would say put them in tournaments as obstacles only. It would make for some real cool scenery and table set up.

It's awesome news that Epic play can run without Huge ships.

We have a very unique meta feel and casual crowd. If the rules are solid enough, they’ll fly

First edition epic allowed huge ships as per page 11 of the rules reference

“Epic Play†: This format increases the recommended squad point total to 300 and allows huge ships and cards with the epic icon (󲁩) to be used.”

Second edition is following in its footsteps. What seems to be different is that

  • huge ships can be officially played in standard 200 point format,
  • Epic has a focus on scenarios/missions,
  • the Wing system for speeding gameplay (and helping aces), and
  • 8 player support in teams or free for all (compared to first edition up to 4 player 2v2).

However, even more of a positive difference is how FFG is treating Epic and huge ships. They are now longer treating them as some of afterthought/occult sub-culture of X-Wing but as full part of the system. The fact most people lump together Epic and huge ships is the result of FFGs nonchalant attitude first edition Epic and huge ships. We only got an Epic sub-forum when, lead by @Darth Meanie , we all kicked off on the forums. They were the dark times but there was hope.

I'll disagree here. FFG called the Huge ships "Epic Ships" in 1st Edition.

Besides being excited for the Huge ships, I am also very excited about the missions/scenarios!
