Legion Terrain Community

By AldousSnow, in Terrain Building

Back before the game was released, myself and a few others on these message boards had a great little community, and issued some fun challenges to all the terrain builders out there. I've had the urge to start this up again.

By a show of hands, who would be interested by a community led monthly terrain building challenge? Open to everyone on the message boards, with the following goals in mind:

-inspire the Legion community

-offer friendly terrain tips and tricks

-showcase your hard work

-help beginners get into terrain building

-show the community terrain options, from zero cost found objects, to the best products on the market, and everything in between.

-and most importantly, get more terrain on your table

While I'm not a Legion player, I am interested in making more terrain (for Star Wars and in general), and I've been eyeing the upcoming Clone Wars release ever since its announce. I'd be down to participate in a community building challenge, though I'd be far more focused on the "cheap and easy with acceptable results" side of things than actually trying to be "best in class."

Still though, having a monthly slot of ideas to build toward would be good for motivation. Count me in.

Awesome. That's one. And you pretty much nailed it. Ive got a list of ideas and I'm always down for new ones.

I'm showing my hand, but I'm not sure you can see it. I'm up for a challenge. Can't always guarantee I'll be able to participate, but it sounds like a good idea.

I too am always up for a good terrain challenge, count me in!

Great idea and I'll be happy to participate ^^

If we join our forces, I'm sure we could build a thriving community of Star Wars Terrain Makers. I really think that terrain is the third army on the table and it's so sad to see games where people didn't put any effort in their terrain set up (like warmachine or ASOIF tables 😥 )

Star Wars Legion is a great opportunity to recreate awesome battles in one of the most epic universe with far more potential reach than any other univers in the game industry. In addition, displaying beautiful tables in tournaments and conventions is a are great way to attract people to the game and thus grow the community.

There is also a lot of great companies out there faciltating the making of awesome table with 3d printing scenery files, resin scenery and so on. Making beautiful table has never been so easy.

Anyway, I would love to help people discover the joys of terrain making 😄

Ok. Awesome. I think if we get this ball rolling, it will get bigger and bigger. I love that quote from @Simpleaswar , "terrain is the third army on the table". I couldn't agree more. I think some units are built for terrain use, and having a variety on the table is key. Star Wars is such an amazing creative environment.

Let's use this thread to workshop ideas, welcome those who are interested, and answer any questions. I'll post this months first June challenge soon. Down the road, we can gather ideas from here, have polls, or whatever works best for us.

Count me in!

Just spitballing ideas, I think it would be nice to let the challenges be open to fit any board style. From what I've garnered, it seems a decent number of folks 'round here are focusing on one or two tables, like Tatooine, Endor, Hoth, and one with WWI-esque trenches. As such, someone making a Tatooine board probably wouldn't have much need of making Endor trees, and someone making a Hoth table wouldn't have much use for Tatooine hovels.

I would imagine something like "Make nature-based terrain," or "Build a major building/landmark for your board," or "Build some new scatter terrain" might work rather well, the idea being that each crafter could then tailor the challenge to their own table (an Endor board might get trees, an Imperial bunker, and some low-foliage, while a Tatooine board might get a rock formation, a Jabba's Palace themed outpost, and some smugglers' crates). Just a thought.

Absolutely. I want everyone to get some useful terrain out of this, in addition to the inspiration and new skills. While I do want some challenges to push boundaries and make us all think, they will all have the ability to tailor to your table.

We could go the route of the Tabletop Crafters Guild on Facebook.... and maybe have a specific material or item each month that needs to be used in a build?

Such as Tea Candle Led Lights, Popsicle Sticks, foam, cardboard, etc.

Or maybe keep it to a broad catagory, like Area Terrain, Ruins, etc.... so each person can Taylor the item to fit their board type.

I think material challenges works for the Tabletop Crafters Guild, because their focus is a wide range of tabletop uses with a wide range of skillbases (DM Scotty, Wyloch's Armory, and Black Magic Craft each show a progressive level of skill from "anybody can do it" to "top-notch custom pieces). Personally, it doesn't appeal to my crafting tastes--I use roughly the same materials in every build. If a challenge required me to go out and buy additional materials, I'd probably just pass. That said, I could still see challenges like that working for other folks, whose taste it is. Maybe consider double challenges that let people decide to go for one or the other, or both? (Like "Build a city building" and "use packaging foam," so you could just build a tower, make some generic foam monstrosity, or build a city from foam, etc.)

Great Idea! I bought a 3D printer early this year and once I found the Star Wars terrain you could print and what people were creating, I immediately ordered my Legion Core set. I'm a beginner at all this, but am totally up for a challenge.

Some really great ideas coming in. It's going to a challenge in itself to make sure everyone is represented. Offering up double challenges is definitely a cool idea.
