Modification Help

By Raven19528, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Question time:

I'm looking to try and modify a Scyk interceptor in a fairly unique way (as in, I haven't seen anyone else do it before). However, it is proving exceedingly difficult to find anything on what to use for modifications to get the effect I am looking to get. Essentially, I want the ship to be able to look like a normal Scyk interceptor, but also be able to rotate the wings forward and tilt them down for a more "attack" like position. For those who need a picture (we all probably do), here is what I'm trying to get conceptually (please ignore the tape):

Does anyone know of any miniature mods that might help me make this possible? I'm open to what's out there, I just don't know where to look or how to properly term what I'm trying to do.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I like it. big fan of pointy things in front. I did something similar with my TIE aggressors but for those i just popped them off and glued them back.

I'd say for anything involving movement your best bet is to lodge the tiny magnets in the wings.

Yes, tiny magnets. You can find 1mm x 1mm disc magnets on ebay for a reasonable price (about $5 for 100 pieces). Avoid anyone shipping from China as it takes a looooong time for them to ship.

Unless you need the wings to move, just pin them - get a tiny drill bit and some paperclip or brass rod that matches in size, and drill into the body and the wings, and insert and glue the bits of paperclip in between.

Yeah, I want them to move. Show up looking like typical Scyk Interceptors, then turning into javelins of destruction and mayhem. :)

Did a quick pic in photoshop to show how I would do it, I would take of the wings and drill a hole straight through the body (in blue) then connect the wings with a pin (in green) through the hole in the body, this will allow the wings to rotate along the (blue) axis. If the hole and pin are the same size friction will keep them in place, but more than likely they won't stay in place, so I'd add a few sets of magnets to either sides of the hole and pin to keep it all in place . in hindsight I'd probably not put the magnets as close to the hole as I drew in the pic, but you get the idea, just keep both pairs to an equal length away from the axis and with the polarity at the same side so they stick at both orientations

Funny how the Fang and Scyk have essentially the same silhouette.

Mandal Motor do this on porpouse, to give the advantage of some precious seconds in dogfight to their pilots meanwhile enemy understand what have in his crosshair

I like that a lot, and if I didn't also want the wings to angle when they moved forward, I would absolutely go with this. As is stands, I got some magnets and am going to try to use one set as the pivot, and an extra set to "lock in" the positions I want. It'll take a bit to get the magnets in and then get everything put together, but I'll post pics once it's done.

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions!

You might mount the wings to male them rotate 180° from rear to front in S-foils attack mode.

The are both Mandal Motors ships, so they have similarities in design.

OP,

Are you kinda trying to do this? Because it is a variant (in fact the one I prefered) of the M3-A when it originally came out in SWG:

Pretty much. Rotating the wings forward gives a pretty close resemblance to that design. However, I wanted them to be able to rotate mid-flight, hence why the magnets are now going to be used. Also going to do different color schemes. The blue and red variant seen in the M3A showcase concept photos, a paint scheme that more closely resembles Inaldra with the orange and tan, and the personal paint scheme of green and blue (as seen in the original photos), because that is how I would paint mine if I had one.

Once I get them modified and painted, I'll probably post in the M3A showcase.

Okay, so preliminary run is complete. I am still working on getting the locking in place to work like I want it to, but is difficult because those are really tiny magnets that I'm using to lock in place. Also, it looks like I'm about 1mm off between the wings, which doesn't sound like much but is really obvious in a miniature.

It still looks great. I didn't find it all that noticable. Besides, these backwater space bandits priorities aren't about precision engineering and more about the bottom line.

if you only want to reverse the wings position mantaining their angolation i suggest you to block them before cutting with a base+catalyst putty hard silicon.

after this you can remove the wings from silicon and cut them beeing shure that if you put them back in the silicon they remain parallel.

then find a way to bond wings with cockpit

i did it on a defender to move the wings and it worked well
