New Player Seeking Advice

By wrecknerds85, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello all,

Again, I'm astounded by the sheer amount of great advice seen here. I've been following, practicing via FlyCasual, and I can definitely recommend for new Rebel players like myself to invest in the Saw's Renegades expansion. The U-Wing and accompanying pilots are really good and the included X-Wing, while no different from the one in the Core Set, aesthetically is cool as ****. Add to that a Y-Wing piloted by Dutch Vander and you've got a solid squad.

Happy flying all

@Force Majeure thanks for the input. The only reason I’m really leaning toward OT is because that’s what comes in the core set. Believe me, I’d love to go out and just build squads for every faction but don’t have $300+ in the budget right now for that! Ha! I’m guessing the TIE Reaper is a 1.0 ship?

Right now the main focus is just playing with the kids, so I’m trying not to go too far down the rabbit hole, though even only playing two games my older son expressed interest in tournaments. He’s a big game kid, so we’ll see. A couple local game stores have X-wing nights so we’ll go check out a couple of those.

Can you tell me why I would need a second damage deck? Is that just to make sure there are enough cards as we start playing with stronger ships?

@Nosytel , if you’re playing casually at home, using just one damage deck between two players is a personal choice - it certainly works and is what the quick start instructs new players to do. You can shuffle and reuse the cards on destroyed ships if you run out. Typically, though, each player has their own in a standard game - and that would be the expectation when playing at a tournament and other official events.

The TIE Reaper pack came out during 1st ed. but it has all necessary 2nd ed. parts to fly one: pilots, upgrades, dials, and ship bases (note that it’s a medium base size). It’s basically a mini conversion kit for the ship. I fly it a lot presently and, while a little tricky to maneuver sometimes (look up “adaptive ailerons”), it can be a fast and fun ship to fly for the Empire!

If you or your kids have an interest in flying a group of 4-7 of the normal TIE Fighters (commonly referred to as a TIE Mini-Swarm / TIE Swarm), it’s worth considering picking up the single fighter pack. The standalone pack has different pilots than the core set and they have good abilities for that sort of squad. Just something worth noting. You can use the X-Wing squad builder app/site to see what comes in which pack by viewing the Collection page.
