Same pilot, different ability.

By Kehl_Aecea, in X-Wing

Would you be interested in current pilots getting new pilot cards with new abilities?

So, let's get hypothetical. Let's say FFG has put out card packs to fill in all the existing known pilots and then Disney puts out a Porkins miniseries showcasing his many piloting feats prior to the Battle of Yavin. Should FFG put out a new Porkins pilot card to emulate some new thing he does?

Or say a new Wedge labeling him as Rogue/Wraith leader and a different ability?

Hmm... Should they? I'm not sure I have an answer. But they did say in the very first Q&A that the subtitles vid be used to differentiate the same pilot if she/he is in multiple factions. I guess that means that could definitely do that with polos in the same faction.

But I also remember in First Edition that that said they try to avoid it where possible because it limits squad building. For example, they originally had Luke Skywalker in the E-wing, but then you couldn't include X-wing Luke in the same squad, so they decided to switch the name to Corran Horn.

With the ability to balance points, I think there is room for multiple abilities for individual pilots, but they would need a really good reason not to just give the ability to a new pilot.

We're far beyond hypothetical here, boyz.

I think it's a good idea. Maybe some switching to different factions as well. Iden Versio as a rebel pilot comes straight to mind.

Anakin and Oddball seem to be intentionally limiting the Republic’s ace-spam whilst still offering them high initiative pilots. So I don’t know that the bit about restricting options plays quite as much of a role at this point, either.

I think Anakin and Han are good examples of where it is justified - for Ani, it's the difference between a child, a Jedi Knight, and a Sith Lord; for Han, it's an arrogant young adult, an arrogant adult with a cause, and an older "been there, done that" father.

In both cases, there are years and character growth between the different versions, so different abilities make sense.

However, take someone like Soontir Fel - there isn't much time between when he flew for the Empire and when he defected, and I highly doubt his overall style is different between the 181st and the Rogues (except for craft differences), so I wouldn't necessarily give a hypothetical Rebel Fel a different ability.

I would not mind at all. could be two good abilities, game breaking if put on different pilots, but having you choose between one good Anakin ability or another, is just great choise. Sometimes a pilot also deserves a new pilot ability.

I’ve been waiting for them to do a Luke Skywalker: Jedi Knight crew card for the Rebels for a long time. So yeah, I’m totally on board with this idea.

I hope they do different versions of pilots and crew/gunners eventually. More options to play beloved characters is a good thing in my opinion. Who wouldn’t want an actual playable Luke gunner or less abusive Vader crew?

In his case I was more specifically referring to the Aethersprite and Y-Wing (where they share a subtitle, ability, etc). Same with Oddball. (I realize you might not have meant your comment to be a response to mine, I just wanted to clarify.)

I'd expect to see Actis Anakin be the exact same one, though I wouldn't be opposed to Ep III Anakin getting to be distinct.

I think it makes sense. For example, let's say the oft-talked about DARTH VADER IN A DEFENDER comes out, they could give him a wayyyyy weaker ability, so as to not make him utterly dominating, while still giving people who wants Vader in another vessel what they want. It's also a matter of balance, and that usually comes with the interaction between ship and ability.

Dalan Oberos is another example

I like the idea but I don't think FFG wants to focus on card packs.
