Atlanta System Open Reflections

By dsul413, in X-Wing

Four of my friends and I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Atlanta System Open this weekend. Four of us flew out from New Mexico and one drove in from Alabama, and we had an absolute blast of a weekend playing X Wing. By and large, the community we met was a pleasure to interact and play with. None of us had played a system open before, and only one had Regionals experience; the rest of us had only played a few local store tournaments or no tournaments before (my friend flying Obi + 3 arcs on stream.) We weren’t really sure what to expect. None of that mattered in game, and I enjoyed games against every one of my opponents and the preponderance of my friends games were the same.

I went 3-3 (with a final salvo win included at the end of the day) with Separatists on Day 1 and 3-0 before losing in round 4 during Hyperspace. My friends all averaged fairly similarly on the weekend overall, with one who played a 4-1 game to try to make the cut and a pair of 4-0 games on day 2 and not making it past. That likely doesn’t seem like much, but we all had a great time and fared better than we hoped going into the day.

And so much swag. Sooooo much swag. We are already thinking of card designs to try to bring our own alt arts to future tournaments.

Other than the BCP app crash significantly delaying Day 1, the tournament seemed to run smoothly and the staff was always helpful and courteous.

Anywho, this post is really meant to be just a thank you to the community for the great fun throughout the weekend.

Always good to hear of a large event with positive gaming outcomes.

Awesome that y'all could make it!

Props to Andy Douglass and MoE Val making top 16.

Out of curiosity, did BCP crash and things were switched over to another system or did they get it to work after all?

They got it to work after, but I believe they had cyrodex running in the background as backup.

I also had a great time at the Atlanta SoS. Most of my opponents were awesome to play against especially the later few rounds. I went 4-2 with the Ocho mixed Vulture swarm which was much better than I expected. Much respect to Ian and Cascade for a great event and many thanks to Dion and Gold squadron for streaming.

Im taking the 8 vultures to the UK nationals this Saturday, if you dont mind sharing a bit on how you did (apart from the 4-2 part ;) ).

playing x-wing in the dark was silly and fun. After Party was a good time too.

My two losses were to quad K-wings and Handbrake Han/Lando. I beat Rebel beef, Vader 3xImdaar, Resistance 5’s and Ani Mace 2xGolds. Rebel beef is an easy match if you can get a range 3 engage with even 4 Vultures against a couple of their ships. The rest just require patience because no one wants to joust you but you have a huge final salvo advantage so don’t chase when you don’t have a good angle. Handbrake Han felt entirely unwinnable. If you have more questions feel free to ask and I will answer as best I can.

Yeah that last round was hilarious. Shout out to Clint my opponent for making it one of the most fun games of the day even though we couldn’t see lol
